Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Geographic And Commercial ExpansionHuntington’s broader geographic footprint and expanding commercial platform provide multiple avenues for durable loan, deposit, and relationship growth. Presence in fast-growing markets and substantial newer-geography expansion can diversify the franchise and support scale over the next several quarters.
Fee-income Diversification And Partnership SynergiesStrong growth across fee businesses, including payments, wealth, treasury management, and capital markets, reduces reliance on lending spreads alone. Veritex and Cadence partnerships are also delivering expected or better revenue synergies, supporting a more diversified earnings base.
Operating Leverage And Capital GenerationExpense discipline alongside continued investment indicates Huntington is converting franchise growth into improving efficiency. Positive operating leverage, solid capital generation, and strong liquidity provide capacity to fund expansion, absorb moderate stress, and return capital while maintaining balance-sheet resilience.
Bears Say
Persistent Deposit Pricing CompetitionElevated deposit competition can raise funding costs and compress net interest margins, particularly when customers demand higher rates or migrate balances among banks. A higher expected deposit beta therefore remains a structural profitability constraint as Huntington pursues loan and deposit growth.
Credit Metrics And Commercial Real Estate RiskSequential deterioration in charge-offs, criticized assets, and nonperforming assets signals rising credit pressure that could require greater provisioning. Commercial real estate exposure is also being adjusted, so weaker credit performance could limit growth and weigh on earnings over the coming quarters.
Lower Returns And Uneven Cash-flow ConsistencyModerate returns on equity indicate that Huntington is generating less profit from its capital base than during earlier peak periods. Historically uneven cash-flow conversion adds uncertainty to earnings quality, potentially limiting confidence in the consistency of future capital generation.

The call was broadly positive. Management highlighted strong fee growth, commercial pipelines, partnership execution, capital generation, operating leverage, liquidity, and a reiterated 2027 EPS outlook.
