Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Contracted LNG PortfolioHigh contracted volume coverage (≈75% for 2026–28) provides durable cash‑flow visibility for core LNG sales, reducing near‑term spot exposure. This underpins project financing, supports dividend policy and buffers funding needs during multi‑year project delivery.
Strong Liquidity And Conservative GearingGearing inside target range and sizable liquidity (~$9.3bn) give Woodside breathing room across a capital‑intensive cycle. This balance sheet strength supports continued distributions, partner sell‑downs and funding of large projects without immediate refinancing pressure.
Project Delivery And Operational ExecutionNear‑completion of Scarborough and demonstrated project execution (Sangomar reliability, unit cost declines) increase future production capacity and diversify supply. Successful delivery converts capital spend into long‑term cash generation and strengthens reserve/production base.
Bears Say
Revenue And Free Cash Flow VolatilityMulti‑year revenue declines and a swing to negative free cash flow in 2025 signal volatile cash conversion across the cycle. Persistent FCF variability limits discretionary capital, constrains payout flexibility and raises reliance on asset sales or partner funding during downturns.
High Near‑term Capital IntensityLarge project commitments (Woodside share ~$9.9bn for Louisiana LNG plus Scarborough/Trion capex) create sustained cash demands. Even with sell‑downs, elevated capital intensity increases execution, timing and funding risk and can compress free cash flow for several years.
Tax & Decommissioning Fiscal DragAn expected PRRT step‑up as Scarborough ramps and material decommissioning outlays (~$500–$800m guided for 2026) create recurring fiscal and non‑operational cash drains. These structural cost pressures add earnings volatility and complicate long‑range dividend and reinvestment planning.
