We recently attended a site visit to OceanaGold’s Haile mine in South Carolina and came away highly impressed with the operational performance of both the mine and mill, as well as the significant development progress being made at Horseshoe underground. Over the last several years, OceanaGold has taken steps to institutionalize a culture of continuous improvement at the mine. This culture shift is beginning to manifest itself in clear and measurable performance improvements, including: (1) improved labour turnover, (2) decreased weather-related work stoppage rates, and (3) increased mill throughput (Figure 1). At the mine, OceanaGold has made improvements in its blast fragmentation performance, as well as upgraded its haulage roads. At the mill, a better understanding of ore characteristics and automated reagent dosing has led to stabilized recovery rates.
