Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call conveyed a mixed outlook. Purple reported substantial revenue, wholesale and gross-margin pressure, a shift to an adjusted EBITDA loss and lower full-year EBITDA guidance. However, the company also highlighted improving late-quarter DTC and e-commerce trends, positive operating cash flow, lower operating expenses and inventory, showroom expansion, significant product innovation and continued cost and sourcing initiatives. Debt maturity and refinancing discussions remain an important uncertainty.
For the remainder of 2026, Purple continues to expect no meaningful recovery in the broader bedding category and is maintaining full year revenue guidance of $420 million to $440 million, while now expecting full year adjusted EBITDA to be in the range of $15 million to $20 million compared with the prior outlook of $20 million to $25 million; the revenue outlook reflects a stronger Q4, supported by an improved marketing plan, normal seasonal strength in DTC and new product introductions, partially offset by continued pressure in wholesale. The company expects to continue generating cash in the fourth quarter, which is traditionally its strongest cash flow quarter, expects same-store comps to turn positive again in the fourth quarter and deliver positive comps for showrooms for the full year, and should end the year with 60 showrooms. Looking into 2027, it continues to target 9 to 12 new showrooms, with approximately half of those locations already identified; the new hybrid collection is expected to begin rolling into its own stores in the first quarter and begin shipping to wholesale customers in March, while a broader market launch of the new Essentials collection is expected around March. The company believes the new products will get margins back up to where they have got to be well north of 45% on a consistent basis.
- Positive Cash Flow and Improved LiquidityCash and cash equivalents were $28.3 million at September 30, 2026, compared with $24.3 million at December 31, 2025 and approximately $23 million at the end of the second quarter. Operating cash flow was positive for the third consecutive quarter and totaled $10.6 million through the first nine months, a $38.7 million improvement over the prior-year period. The company expects to continue generating cash in the fourth quarter.
- Significant Product Innovation PipelinePurple described its product innovation pipeline as the fullest in company history, with new mattresses rolling out across its Essentials and hybrid collections. The launches represent the first major refresh of both collections at the same time and cover almost 90% of mattress unit volume.
- New GelFlex Grid and Mattress PortfolioThe company unveiled the first major redesign of its proprietary GelFlex Grid, featuring patented circular geometry intended to provide more precise contouring, better responsiveness and reduced motion transfer. The new hybrid collection will replace Restore with improved construction and performance, while the Essentials collection launched on the e-commerce site with a broader market launch expected around March.
- Encouraging Late-Quarter Direct-to-Consumer TrendsAlthough full-quarter DTC revenue declined 9% year-over-year, DTC net sales increased approximately 1% across August and September combined. Labor Day DTC sales were slightly above last year during the holiday period.
- Improved E-Commerce and Amazon PerformanceE-commerce revenue was down 6% for the quarter, but sales increased approximately 2% across August and September combined, supported by growth at Purple.com and Amazon. Amazon benefited from expanded Prime eligibility, improved product availability, faster delivery, fulfillment improvements and advertising efficiency. Conversion rates on Purple.com also improved significantly year-over-year.
- Showroom Expansion ContinuesPurple opened two showrooms during the quarter in San Antonio and Jacksonville, bringing the total to 57 at quarter end. A Cleveland location opened in October, and two additional fourth-quarter openings are expected to bring the year-end total to 60. For 2027, the company continues to target 9 to 12 new showrooms, with approximately half already identified and several first-quarter locations approved and under construction.
- Underlying Showroom Trends Remain Relatively ResilientWhen the second and third quarters are considered together, showroom sales were 2% below the comparable prior-year period and same-store comp sales were down only 1%. After neutralizing the shipping change and recognizing the price increases, year-to-date showroom comps were up nearly 2%. The company expects same-store comps to turn positive in the fourth quarter and showrooms to deliver positive comps for the full year.
- Operating Expense and Cost DisciplineOperating expenses were $51.7 million, down 25% year-over-year, reflecting lower marketing and sales expenses, advertising spending, payroll-related costs, restructuring charges and impairment charges. The company also consolidated its manufacturing footprint, adjusted labor to production volume, managed plant costs and sublet its corporate headquarters to reduce operating expenses and improve collaboration.
- Improved GAAP Net LossGAAP net loss improved to $1.4 million from a GAAP net loss of $11.7 million in the prior-year period.
- Inventory and Working Capital ImprovementNet inventories declined 10% to $53.5 million from $59.7 million at December 31, 2025, reflecting continued inventory improvements and improved working capital efficiency.
- Expanded Wholesale Support and New Product OpportunitiesPurple began increasing sales coverage for regional and independent retailers and plans to expand the effort in the fourth quarter with improved training and business support. The company will introduce new Essentials and hybrid collections, pillow products and clearer product differentiation at the Las Vegas market in January. Early retailer and customer feedback was described as very strong.
- Cost and Sourcing Initiatives ContinueSupplier diversification initiatives are beginning to show benefits, with additional sourcing initiatives expected to take effect during the first half of 2027. The company also stated that it is keeping a close eye on plant costs, labor, inventory and working capital.
- Marketing and Customer Advocacy InitiativesPurple is shifting toward a more consistent always-on brand awareness approach, increasing emphasis on national advertising, testimonial marketing, influencer marketing, affiliate partnerships and consumer public relations. The company brought together 50 early customers for its 10th anniversary and plans to launch Grid Day and the Grid it Forward campaign as part of a broader effort to activate existing customers and generate word of mouth.
- New Costco and Pillow Product OpportunitiesFollowing Black Friday, Purple plans to introduce a new mattress for the holiday season and its first Purple pillow offering at Costco. It also recently introduced an airline travel pillow, plans to launch a super-premium down pillow, and is introducing the Renew Grid pillow at Costco as a more accessible alternative to the Harmony pillow.
- Current Pricing Actions Are Expected to Support Future MarginsManagement said it currently believes it is done taking price increases, while continuing to monitor raw-material prices. Pricing taken in June had not fully filtered through to all wholesale customers during the third quarter and is expected to appear in the fourth quarter, which management said should improve gross margin.
