Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 21, 2026|% Change Since:0.49%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive. Management reported strong profitability, an exceptional net interest margin, improving classified and criticized loan metrics, solid operating performance, broad lending pipelines, a new Ducati partnership, continued capital returns, and expectations for deposit growth. These positives were partially offset by elevated charge-offs, ongoing powersports losses, loan prepayments, deposit and funding pressures, expected margin giveback, and higher operating costs.

Company Guidance

Management expects loan growth in the fourth quarter of 2026 to be “in the low single level,” expense growth to “continue to be modest in the quarters ahead,” and deposit growth in the fourth quarter, with most post-acquisition attrition “largely behind us”; it expects to give back “5 basis points or so” on margin but remain “solidly above a 25 margin for the near and intermediate term,” assuming “high cost deposit attrition slows,” and expects “45% of our loan book” and “25% of our securities portfolio” to reprice in the “next 3 to 4 quarters.” Management said investors could reasonably expect to “take out 5% of shares a year,” reserve levels will “not run much lower from here,” near-term expenses around $51.5 million “makes perfect sense,” and annual expense growth in the “3 to 4% range” is expected, while the common dividend was increased “by 14%” in the fourth quarter of 2026.

  • Strong Quarterly ProfitabilityThird-quarter GAAP net income was $28.9 million, or $0.56 per diluted share, with return on assets of 1.69%, return on average tangible common equity of 15.77%, and an efficiency ratio of 52.34%. Excluding MSR valuation adjustments, net income was $28.5 million, or $0.55 per diluted share.
  • Exceptional Net Interest Margin PerformanceTax-equivalent net interest margin increased 4 basis points from the linked quarter and 22 basis points from the prior year to 5.27%. Net interest income rose to $84.0 million from $83.3 million in the prior quarter and increased $1.3 million from the prior year.
  • Improved Credit MetricsExcluding the elevated charge-offs from one previously discussed credit, asset quality trends improved significantly. Classified loans decreased $57.8 million, nonperforming loans decreased $16.8 million, and criticized loans declined $61.3 million, or 38%, during the quarter. Management said classified loans were at their lowest level since before COVID and that the bank feels as good about the loan book as it has in several years.
  • Stable Operating Leverage and EfficiencyManagement said operating leverage remains strong and the margin is largely stable. The adjusted tax-equivalent efficiency ratio was 52.06% in the third quarter, compared with 50.8% in the second quarter, and management described the efficiency performance as excellent.
  • Strength in Wealth Management and Mortgage BankingWealth management continued to show strong performance and growth on both a quarter-over-linked-quarter and prior-year basis. Mortgage banking income increased $436 thousand from the linked quarter and $762 thousand from the prior-year period, primarily due to changes in mortgage servicing rights marked-to-market valuations.
  • Positive Commercial Loan PipelineAlthough reported loan balances were roughly flat, management said third-quarter loan production was better than the results indicated and was in line with budget. The commercial pipeline was described as broad-based across small business, middle market, C&I, health care, investment commercial real estate, and sponsored investment leasing. Management said the fourth-quarter pipeline was one of the stronger pipelines in a long time and was optimistic about the first quarter of 2027.
  • Broad Consumer Lending DemandPowersports application volume was up a little over the prior year, while originations were very similar to the same period last year. Electric vehicle business was up quite a bit, and management described overall consumer demand as strong.
  • Ducati USA PartnershipThe company signed a multiyear endorsed agreement with Ducati USA. Dealer feedback was described as tremendous, application flow had already started, and management expects the partnership to provide some lift in the fourth quarter and a substantial boost to originations in 2027.
  • Capital Return and Dividend IncreaseThe company repurchased approximately 1.5 million shares during the third quarter for about $39.2 million, bringing year-to-date repurchases to 3.4 million shares at an average price of $22.74. Management expects to remain active in repurchasing shares and said investors could reasonably expect the company to take out 5% of shares a year while retaining the ability to pursue smaller fill-in acquisitions. The common dividend was increased 14% for the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • Deposit Attrition Expected to StabilizeManagement said most of the deposit attrition following the Evergreen acquisition was largely behind the company and expects deposits to grow in the fourth quarter, although some of the growth will come at a little more rate.
  • Future Loan and Securities Repricing TailwindsApproximately 50% of the loan book is variable and generally reprices with a 30-day lag relative to SOFR. Management said 45% of the loan book and 25% of the securities portfolio will reprice over the next 3 to 4 quarters, providing some future tailwind. Management expects to remain solidly above a 5% margin for the near and intermediate term.
  • Syndication Portfolio ReductionThe company reduced its syndications portfolio by $53 million during the quarter. The portfolio has declined from a peak of $550 million to roughly $285 million, or by more than 60% since the end of 2021. Management said the business will continue but will not be a material or primary part of the balance sheet.
  • Strong Capital Position Supports Growth OptionsManagement said the company has sufficient capital to continue share repurchases while also pursuing acquisition opportunities. The company remains in conversations regarding strategic opportunities and is hopeful that an opportunity will arise next year.
  • Modest Expense Growth TargetManagement expects expense growth to remain modest and indicated that a 3% to 4% annual expense growth range would be a strong outcome given the current cost environment.
