Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Profitability Growth
Strong EBITDA and NPAT growth indicates improved earnings capacity, supported by higher regulated electricity revenue and the absence of a prior gas impairment. Management’s FY27 EBITDA guidance of $540–$560 million suggests this stronger profitability is expected to continue.
Electricity Network Position
Vector’s Auckland electricity network is benefiting from customer growth and rising demand, while record investment supports capacity and resilience. Its large connection base and role in electrification provide a durable platform for regulated infrastructure earnings over coming periods.
Improved Leverage And Credit
Lower debt-to-equity and a BBB+ rating with positive outlook indicate a more resilient balance sheet for a capital-intensive utility. This supports access to funding and provides greater financial stability as Vector executes its long-term network investment programme.
Bears Say
Heavy Capital Intensity
Persistent heavy capital requirements absorb much of Vector’s operating cash flow, leaving free cash flow thin and volatile. This reduces flexibility for debt reduction, dividends, or other investment if operating conditions weaken, especially as FY27 capex is guided to another record level.
Gas Distribution Decline
Declining gas volumes and connections point to a contracting part of Vector’s portfolio, while management also cited market uncertainty and a shift toward maintenance spending. This can limit growth and reduce the contribution from gas assets as customer energy preferences change.
Debt And Refinancing Pressure
Higher net debt alongside elevated investment increases funding demands at a time when refinancing is approaching. Although leverage remains manageable, refinancing needs can constrain capital allocation and leave Vector more exposed to financing conditions while it funds substantial network expenditure.

VCT Earnings Call
Earnings Call SentimentPositive
The call presents a predominantly positive performance: strong revenue (+12%), sizeable EBITDA growth (+20%), a large increase in NPAT (+55%), record electricity network investment and improved operating cash flow. Management provided bullish FY'27 guidance (higher EBITDA and record-level capex) and retained a BBB+ rating with positive outlook. Headwinds include flat gas earnings with declining volumes, higher operating and pass-through costs, an accounting loss from the Bluecurrent JV (offset by cash distributions), modestly higher net debt and variability in capital contributions. On balance the operational and financial improvements and constructive guidance outweigh the challenges.
