Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. Management reported record third-quarter results, broadening carrier demand, rapid growth in home and renters and agent revenue, strong operating leverage, substantial share repurchases, and maintained free cash flow and double-digit growth expectations. The main negative items were the expected Under-65 Health contribution decline, normal fourth-quarter seasonality, lower shopping activity versus its earlier peak, and the fact that AI-agent shopping has not yet produced marketplace impact.
For the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue of $355 million to $375 million, up approximately 25% year over year at the midpoint; contribution of $54 million to $57 million, up approximately 18% year over year at the midpoint; and adjusted EBITDA of $36 million to $39 million, up approximately 22% year over year at the midpoint. The Health vertical is expected to be approximately 4% of total revenue, and adjusted EBITDA guidance includes a decline in contribution from 65 Health of approximately $900 thousand year-over-year; excluding under-65 health, contribution is expected to increase 21% and adjusted EBITDA to increase by 26% year over year at the midpoint. For the full year 2026, the company continues to expect $90 million to $100 million in free cash flow, while for 2027 and beyond it expects double digit growth across all of the metrics; cash taxes are expected to be approximately 1% in 2026, in the mid single digits in 2027, and in the mid teens thereafter.
- Best Quarter in Company HistoryManagement described the third quarter as the best quarter in MediaAlpha's history across all key metrics. Revenue was $376 million, up 23% year over year; contribution was $57 million, up 26%; and adjusted EBITDA was $39 million, up 36%.
- Broadening Carrier Demand and Customer MixMultiple carriers meaningfully increased their budgets, driven by intensifying competition for policy growth. Three carriers each represented more than 10% of third-quarter revenue, while the fourth-largest carrier represented 9.6%, reflecting progress in diversifying demand.
- Auto Insurance GrowthAuto insurance revenue grew 17% year over year and remained the largest driver of growth in the property and casualty insurance vertical.
- Record Home and Renters RevenueHome and renters revenue reached a record $66 million in the third quarter, up 116% year over year. Management attributed the growth to strengthening market conditions and wallet-share gains as traditional and digitally native carriers allocated more budget to MediaAlpha.
- Agent Business ExpansionMediaAlpha worked directly with more than 3,000 active agents, up from approximately 2,000 a year ago. Third-quarter agent revenue was $21 million, up approximately 46% from $14 million a year ago. Management described agents as a significant share of insurance distribution and an attractive growth driver.
- Large Marketplace Scale and Optimization GainsThe platform powered more than $2.5 billion of annualized property and casualty advertising spend in the third quarter. In a recent carrier test, opting into MediaAlpha's proprietary optimization models improved conversion rates by roughly 80%, driving greater sales at a lower cost per policy.
- Operating LeverageGrowth accelerated down the income statement, with revenue up 23%, contribution up 26%, and adjusted EBITDA up 36% year over year. MediaAlpha converted 69% of contribution into adjusted EBITDA, its highest level since 2024.
- Strong Core Business Excluding Under-65 HealthExcluding Under-65 Health, revenue grew 26% year over year and adjusted EBITDA grew 42% year over year, reflecting strong performance in the core business.
- Capital Deployment and Share RepurchasesMediaAlpha deployed $21 million across share repurchases and reductions to its Tax Receivable Agreement obligations during the third quarter. It repurchased approximately 800,000 shares for $9 million at an average price of $11.25 per share. Since quarter end through October 26, it repurchased an additional 1.8 million shares for $18 million at an average price of $10.38 per share, using $82 million of its $100 million authorization.
- TRA Liability Reduction and Cash SavingsIn September, MediaAlpha repurchased $23 million of its TRA liability for $12 million, representing a 47% discount and generating an $11 million gain recorded in the third quarter. Management expects the transaction to retain approximately $5 million of incremental cash flow annually and said it continues to benefit from the related cash tax shield.
- Significant Cumulative Buyback ActivitySince September 2025, MediaAlpha has repurchased approximately $115 million of stock, reducing shares outstanding by approximately 11.2 million shares, or 16%.
- Fourth-Quarter Growth GuidanceFor the fourth quarter, management expects revenue of $355 million to $375 million, up approximately 25% year over year at the midpoint; contribution of $54 million to $57 million, up approximately 18% at the midpoint; and adjusted EBITDA of $36 million to $39 million, up approximately 22% at the midpoint.
- Full-Year Free Cash Flow Outlook MaintainedMediaAlpha continues to expect $90 million to $100 million of free cash flow for full-year 2026.
- Long-Term Double-Digit Growth OutlookManagement expressed confidence in years of durable double-digit growth. The outlook is supported by continued investment from the top two carriers, accelerating spend from carriers three through five, approximately 6% long-term premium growth in property and casualty insurance, digital advertising penetration of about 40% in P&C versus approximately 80% in other industries, and the secular shift toward direct-to-consumer distribution.
- Positive Insurance Market ConditionsManagement said the property and casualty market remains in the early stages of a growth-oriented soft market cycle. The second quarter was described as the most profitable period by some measures within the P&C industry in 25 years, fueling market-share competition and increased carrier advertising spend.
- Home Insurance Capacity RecoveryHome insurance growth was supported by carriers increasing capacity and advertising in Florida, California, and Texas after limited catastrophic events over the prior year and a half to two years.
- AI Opportunity in Insurance DistributionManagement expects advertising to emerge as the dominant monetization paradigm for consumer AI companies and views AI as a potential strong tailwind for non-auto insurance verticals, including homeowners and small-business commercial insurance, where transactions are currently primarily completed through offline agents and call centers.
- Stable Contribution Margin OutlookManagement expects contribution margin percentage to remain relatively stable, with open-marketplace take rates across property and casualty and health described as steady and showing some growth.
