Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Sustained Operating Income GrowthSeven consecutive quarters of adjusted operating income growth (16% YoY in the latest quarter) signals durable execution across product lines and improved underlying earnings power. Repeated operating-income expansion suggests management is stabilizing core underwriting and spread economics, supporting multi‑quarter cash earnings resilience even if GAAP items fluctuate.
Strong Capital & Liquidity PositionRegulatory capital comfortably above buffers, leverage at target and meaningful holding company liquidity provide a structural cushion. This strengthens capacity for product development, balance‑sheet management and absorbing market stress without forced asset sales, supporting long‑term solvency, rating stability and the ability to pursue strategic initiatives.
Rebalanced Annuity Mix & FIA AccelerationAccount growth and a shift toward spread‑based and fixed indexed annuities (RILA, FIAs, fixed annuities) reduce sensitivity to equity markets and interest rate mark‑to‑market swings. Higher share of spread‑based products and rapid FIA sales growth support steadier fee/spread income and lower earnings volatility over the medium term as the product mix normalizes.
Bears Say
Inconsistent Cash GenerationLarge multi‑year swings in operating cash flow undermine confidence in the convertibility of accounting profits to cash. After a big 2022 inflow, 2023–24 cash drains and only modest TTM cash generation constrain discretionary uses of cash, complicate capital planning and increase reliance on financing during stress, weakening long‑term financial flexibility.
Material Variable Annuity OutflowsSustained, large VA outflows shrink fee‑bearing account balances and reduce spread income, raising per‑policy costs and hedging needs. Persistent redemptions can pressure margins, require higher reinvestment or hedging costs, and slow recovery of annuity operating income, constraining the durability of retirement‑product earnings.
Elevated Disability Loss RatiosRising disability loss ratios driven by PFML rollout and adverse LTD outcomes point to underwriting and pricing pressure in Group Protection. Higher claim incidence or severity can compress margins, require reserve strengthening or rate increases, and create recurring profitability headwinds in a core workplace benefits franchise.
