Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Margin RecoveryMargins and profitability have meaningfully recovered from 2023 losses, with TTM net income and higher EBIT/net margins. Sustained margin improvement supports lasting cash generation and operational resilience across business units, improving ability to fund investment and service obligations.
Solid Cash GenerationConsistent positive operating and free cash flow, including a strong TTM rebound, indicates the company can fund operations, capex and deleveraging internally. High cash conversion versus net income supports financial flexibility and durability through healthcare cycles.
Improved Leverage And ReturnsMaterial reduction in leverage versus 2021–2022 and a return to positive ROE indicates a healthier capital structure. Lower leverage reduces refinancing risk and interest burden, strengthening the company's ability to withstand slower revenue periods and invest in core healthcare businesses.
Bears Say
Sizable Absolute DebtDespite improved leverage ratios, the company still carries nearly €12B of debt. That absolute burden limits strategic optionality, increases sensitivity to interest cost changes, and reduces headroom for acquisitions or capex if operating conditions deteriorate.
Choppy Multi-year RevenueA volatile, non‑linear revenue profile with a sharp 2023 decline and only modest stabilization raises execution risk. Durable growth depends on regaining consistent top‑line momentum across dialysis, hospitals and pharma segments; persistent revenue instability constrains long‑term margin expansion.
Volatile Free Cash Flow TrendWhile current FCF is strong, wide swings in free cash flow across recent years indicate earnings and cash are sensitive to operational or working capital swings. This volatility increases forecasting uncertainty and could constrain reinvestment or debt reduction in weaker periods.
