Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 28, 2026|% Change Since:8.96%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was cautiously positive. Management highlighted a meaningful sequential earnings improvement, stronger North American execution, productivity gains, price realization, facility simplification, and progress on the EMEA separation. However, these improvements were accompanied by weak demand, persistent inflation, higher input costs, negative third-quarter free cash flow, a lower full-year North America EBITDA outlook, and below-expectation EMEA results. Highlights outweighed the lowlights, but management remained cautious about market conditions through the fourth quarter and into 2027.

Company Guidance

International Paper expects North America to outperform the industry by >1% in the fourth quarter and by approx. 2% for the full year, with fourth-quarter Packaging Solutions North America adjusted EBITDA of approximately $700 million to $740 million and full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA of $2.27 billion to $2.31 billion; price and mix are expected to be favorable, volume favorable, operations and costs slightly favorable sequentially, and input costs unfavorable primarily driven by higher diesel and OCC costs. Full-year free cash flow is expected to be approximately $100 million to $200 million. The company expects current market conditions to persist in the fourth quarter and into 2027, expects long-term demand volume growth of a half point to a point, and expects the markets to be pretty flattish near term; it is not providing guidance for 2027 at this stage, with 2027 guidance planned for the fourth quarter call at the end of January. The September price increase is probably fully realized beginning of Q2, end of Q1, something like that, taking about 4 or 5 months to fully realize and work it through, while Riverdale is expected to reach full ramp through first quarter and second quarter of next year. The company is no longer including existing Packaging Solutions EMEA US GAAP financial guidance and does not anticipate providing such guidance in the future.

  • Sequential Earnings and Margin ImprovementThird-quarter adjusted EBITDA increased to $843 million, including $37 million of corporate expense, while adjusted EBITDA margin improved nearly 400 basis points sequentially to 13.6%. Adjusted operating earnings per share was $0.37.
  • North America Packaging EBITDA Increased 56%Packaging Solutions North America increased adjusted EBITDA by 56% sequentially and delivered $663 million in third-quarter adjusted EBITDA. Price realization and stronger operating performance drove the improvement despite softer demand and higher input costs.
  • Favorable North America Pricing and MixNorth America price and mix contributed $141 million favorably, reflecting faster realization of previously published price increases announced through June. The September price increase is expected to begin flowing through late in the fourth quarter and be substantially realized by the end of the first quarter or beginning of the second quarter.
  • Improved Mill Efficiency and ProductivityNorth America operations and costs were $85 million favorable sequentially, with improved mill efficiency as the key driver. Initial Riverdale ramp-up benefits, the completed machine conversion, a full quarter of NORPAK earnings, 20 strategic initiatives, and lower ongoing mill costs also contributed.
  • Pine Hill Restarted Ahead of ScheduleThe company completed Pine Hill roof repairs and restarted the mill ahead of schedule. Management said disciplined work and a commitment to safety restored operations safely, limited disruption across the mill system, and minimized the impact on customer box shipments.
  • North America Expected to Outperform Industry DemandNorth American box shipments declined approximately 2% year over year in the third quarter, which was 1 percentage point better than the estimated industry demand decline. The company expects to outperform the industry by more than 1% in the fourth quarter and by approximately 2% for the full year, primarily through business won in prior periods.
  • Positive Fourth-Quarter North America OutlookPackaging Solutions North America fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA is expected to be approximately $700 million to $740 million. Price and mix are expected to be favorable, volume is expected to be favorable as seasonally higher daily demand more than offsets two fewer shipping days, and operations and costs are expected to be slightly favorable sequentially.
  • Additional Productivity Benefits ExpectedManagement expects further fourth-quarter and 2027 improvement from productivity gains, the Riverdale ramp-up, NORPAK synergies, continued elimination of operating-cost tails from closed facilities, and the absence of the third-quarter Pine Hill expense.
  • North American Facility SimplificationThe company said it has closed 20 facilities in the United States, including box plants and mills, while losing no business in the process and winning business. Management expects trend-line productivity and meaningfully above-trend improvements as prior investments ramp.
  • EMEA Sequential Improvement and Cost ActionsPackaging Solutions EMEA improved sequentially and delivered $210 million of third-quarter adjusted EBITDA. Cost-out actions, tighter management of controllable costs, and lower variable costs associated with reduced volume helped mitigate rising input costs.
  • EMEA Price and Mix ImprovementEMEA price and mix were $27 million favorable sequentially, primarily reflecting the pass-through of previously published paper price increases and higher prices on external paper sales.
  • Separation Planning ProgressThe company said it is advancing the EMEA separation and is on track to finalize execution. It is evaluating a potential sale while continuing the spin-off work in parallel, and expects to provide more information at DS Smith's Capital Markets Day on November 3.
  • Potential Standalone Company ProfilesUnder the potential spin-off scenario, management expects both companies to have investment-grade credit ratings, tailored investment and capital allocation strategies, and compelling financial profiles. International Paper plans to retain approximately a 20% stake in the independent DS Smith company.
  • Capital Investment Continuing in North AmericaManagement said North American capital expenditures will remain elevated for a couple more years and that the range used in 2026 should be similar in 2027, reflecting ongoing capitalization needs and opportunities.
  • Expected Fourth-Quarter Cash Flow RecoveryManagement expects a much stronger free-cash-flow profile in the fourth quarter from stronger operating results, a working-capital swing back to positive after the inventory build, and the lowest capital-expenditure quarter of the year.
