Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
North America Volume OutperformanceConsistent NA box volume outperformance (third consecutive quarter) signals structural share gains versus peers. Sustained volume leadership supports pricing leverage, steadier plant throughput and higher utilization, underpinning durable EBITDA and cash generation over the next several quarters.
Productivity And Capacity ImprovementsA 7% productivity gain and improved mill utilization reflect lasting operational improvements. Combined with increased per‑facility investment, these upgrades lower unit costs, reduce outage risk and should sustainably lift margins and reliability across the converting and mill footprint over a multi‑quarter horizon.
Positive Operating Cash Flow And Balance Sheet ActionsPositive operating cash flow (~$2.6B TTM) and proactive use of asset sale proceeds to cut debt demonstrate cash generation and financial discipline. Moderate leverage (≈0.7x) plus targeted debt paydown enhance flexibility to fund capex and restructuring without immediate refinancing stress.
Bears Say
Deteriorated ProfitabilityDespite stronger revenue, the company is not converting top‑line into operating profits, producing a sizeable net loss and negative ROE (~-20%). Persistent operating losses indicate structural cost or mix issues that must be resolved to restore sustainable cash returns and shareholder value.
Weak And Volatile Free Cash FlowFCF weakened materially (negative in 2025; TTM only modestly positive) and recent quarter relied on a one‑time tax refund. Reliance on one‑offs and asset sales to manage leverage makes cash conversion unreliable, complicating steady funding of capex, dividends and transformation programs.
EMEA Energy Exposure & Transformation CostsEMEA margins are under structural pressure as energy cost spikes hit realization while box pricing lags months. Coupled with elevated transformation and footprint change costs, this creates a sustained margin squeeze in EMEA that can weigh on enterprise EBITDA until commercial and cost actions fully take hold.
