Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall, with record Q3 volumes and earnings, a 97% Renewable Products utilization rate, substantial progress in deleveraging, an improvement program that delivered nearly twice its original target, and a favorable renewable-fuels market and regulatory outlook. The main negatives were the higher cost and delayed timing of the Rotterdam expansion, ongoing turnaround-related volume constraints, safety stagnation, SAF competition, hedging pressure, and continued market volatility. Management remained confident in the Rotterdam investment and the company's long-term growth strategy.
The outlook remains unchanged and the guidance remains unchanged: full-year investments are guided at approximately EUR 1.2 billion; Renewable Products sales volume guidance is “approximately on the same level,” with 2026 guidance intact; Rotterdam 2 is planned for technical start-up end of 2027, with commercial ramp-up starting in early 2028, so “for your '27 volumes, you should not plan for the Rotterdam Line 2”; terming is historically targeted in the “50%, 60% range”; Renewable Products utilization is “targeting that low 80s,” while “would not use the 90% as a new normal yet”; and the new dividend policy is to pay 20% to 40% of earnings per share.
- Record Q3 Production and EarningsNeste described Q3 2026 as a historical achievement. Renewable Products volumes reached almost 1.3 million kilotons, a record level, the Oil Products refining margin was exceptionally high at $48 per barrel, total company EBITDA was over EUR 1.5 billion, and Renewable Products generated approximately $1 billion of EBITDA.
- Strong Renewable Products OperationsSingapore and Rotterdam operated very well, supporting higher volumes and improved financial performance. Renewable Products utilization reached 97% in the quarter, supported by additional maintenance resources, greater use of predictive maintenance, faster responses to technical issues, and modifications intended to improve plant resilience.
- Renewable Products EBITDA ImprovementRenewable Products delivered roughly two-thirds of the EUR 1,555 million comparable EBITDA result. The improvement versus the prior quarter was primarily driven by higher sales volumes, with the majority of the increase coming from renewable diesel.
- Performance Improvement Program Exceeded TargetThe performance improvement program reached EUR 697 million of annualized EBITDA run-rate impact, compared with the original target of EUR 350 million. The realized impact in Q3 was EUR 172 million, with revenue and margin optimization representing 44% of the total and cost reductions representing 56%. The two-year program is scheduled to end at the end of 2026.
- Strong Renewable Diesel Market ConditionsThe renewable diesel reference margin averaged $100 higher than in the previous quarter despite moving sharply during the period. Management said global markets remained tight, margins were comparatively high, and the outlook for renewable diesel was very positive.
- Oil Products Delivered Strong Earnings Despite TurnaroundOil Products generated approximately EUR 0.5 billion of EBITDA despite being in turnaround since late August. The segment's utilization rate fell to around 50% and product volumes declined by approximately 1.5 million tons because of the turnaround, but the $48-per-barrel refining margin supported the result.
- Porvoo Turnaround Completed SuccessfullyPorvoo TA26 was completed and was described as clearly better than TA24. Management said the company had learned how to manage complex turnarounds more effectively and expects to run Porvoo into 2029 with good production.
- Cash Flow and Deleveraging ProgressQ3 cash flow was EUR 877 million, supported by strong profitability and effective inventory planning around the Oil Products turnaround. Leverage declined to 22.6%, and management said the company was comfortably meeting both financial targets established in early 2025.
- Financial Position Supports Investment and DividendsManagement said the balance sheet has strengthened every quarter and that the improved financial position provides resilience and a foundation for both dividends and future investment. The Board introduced a dividend policy of paying 20% to 40% of earnings per share.
- Rotterdam Expansion Progress and Strategic CapacityConstruction of the Rotterdam expansion is substantially advanced, with some units in pre-commissioning and others in commissioning. Once completed, the project is expected to add 1.3 million tons of capacity, taking Rotterdam's total capacity to 2.7 million tons and Neste's total capacity in the sector to 6.8 million tons.
- Positive Regulatory and Energy-Security OutlookManagement said the European regulatory framework and RED III were positive for the business, with the European renewable diesel market expected to double by the turn of the decade. The company also said the energy-security discussion was strengthening the need for renewable fuel production and that its renewable-fuel markets had become more diversified across countries.
- Investment and Debottlenecking PipelineNeste maintained full-year investment guidance of approximately EUR 1.2 billion. Management said 2027 capital allocation would include the Rotterdam expansion, working-capital needs, and organic debottlenecking investments with relatively good and short paybacks. Management also said further ideas exist to improve production from existing assets.
- Working-Capital Management Supported Cash GenerationRenewable Products inventories were at a high level at the end of September because Neste had prepared to serve customers during turnarounds. Management said inventory planning moderated the working-capital impact in Q3 and expected product inventories to decline in Q4 as deliveries continued.
- Renewable Products Utilization Improvement TargetManagement said the 97% Q3 utilization rate was an extraordinarily good quarter rather than a new normal. The current target is utilization in the low 80s, compared with levels in the mid-70s in earlier periods, with further evidence expected after the planned turnarounds.
- Porvoo Remains a Strategically Important AssetManagement described Porvoo as a critical asset for domestic and regional fuel supply, with potential over time to convert more of the refinery toward sustainable fuels. The current configuration includes two renewable-production lines and other lines producing fossil fuels for the domestic and broader regional markets.
