Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Conservative Balance SheetDebt of about $86M against $3.25B of equity leaves Peabody with substantial financial capacity. This conservative structure can help absorb coal-price and production volatility, fund mine obligations, and preserve strategic flexibility even while earnings are weak.
Strong Cash GenerationPositive operating and free cash flow while reported earnings are negative demonstrates meaningful cash conversion. Although coal-cycle volatility can affect results, this cash generation supports liquidity, capital needs, reclamation obligations, and shareholder returns.
Centurion Growth AssetCenturion could strengthen Peabody’s metallurgical coal portfolio through a long-life, first-quartile-cost asset with access to India’s growing steel market. A successful ramp would add volume and potentially improve the company’s earnings mix over time.
Bears Say
Sustained Profitability DeteriorationThe shift from double-digit margins to losses indicates that pricing and cost pressures are materially weakening operating leverage. Persistent margin compression could limit reinvestment, reduce returns on capital, and make cash generation less reliable.
High Coal-Cycle ExposurePeabody remains exposed to commodity prices, utility demand, steel production, export logistics, and regulatory or reclamation costs. These structural dependencies can produce substantial earnings volatility and make durable profitability difficult across the cycle.
Operational Leadership TransitionA planned COO transition introduces execution and continuity risk while Peabody is ramping Centurion and managing mine operations. Retaining Yeates as a consultant reduces disruption, but the company must still transfer operational knowledge effectively.

Company Description
Peabody Energy Comm
Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and founded in 1883, Peabody Energy Corporation operates as a prominent global entity in the coal mining sector. Its vast operations encompass the United States, Australia, Japan, India, China, and several other countries across Asia and beyond. The company organizes its extensive activities into key divisions: Seaborne Thermal Mining, Seaborne Metallurgical Mining, Powder River Basin Mining, and other U.S. Thermal Mining segments. Peabody's core business involves the extraction, processing, and sale of various types of coal. This includes thermal coal, primarily supplied to electricity generation facilities, as well as bituminous and sub-bituminous coal. Additionally, it mines a range of metallurgical coals, such as hard, semi-hard, and semi-soft coking coal, alongside pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, which it delivers to industrial clients and steel manufacturers. As of the end of 2021, the corporation maintained interests in 17 coal mining sites situated in both the U.S. and Australia, possessing approximately 2.5 billion tons of validated and likely coal reserves. It also managed around 450,000 acres of surface land through a combination of ownership and lease agreements. Beyond its mining endeavors, Peabody also facilitates direct and brokered trading of coal and related freight contracts, and furnishes transportation services.
BTU Earnings Call
Q2 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call was mixed: operational and commercial strength across seaborne thermal and U.S. thermal delivered solid adjusted EBITDA, improved realized export prices, strong cash/liquidity and strategic progress (rare earth pilot, West Coast export proof-of-concept). Offsetting these positives, the Centurion longwall commissioning issues materially reduced metallurgical volumes and financial results (≈$80M impact and 1.0 million ton reduction in expected Centurion sales), caused higher met costs and produced a Q1 GAAP net loss. Rising diesel and freight costs add near-term margin risk, though management expects Centurion to reach full production rates in the back half of 2026 and believes the balance sheet provides flexibility to manage the disruption.View all BTU earnings summariesBTU Revenue Breakdown
