Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Revenue And Profitability RecoveryThe rebound from 2024 losses shows restored earnings power and stronger operating execution. Sustained revenue growth and improved margins provide a healthier base for capital generation, though future durability remains tied to credit and funding conditions.
Diversified Fee-based GrowthGrowth in wealth, payments and investment services broadens KeyCorp beyond spread income and can improve revenue resilience across rate cycles. The mass-affluent strategy has added 59,000 households, leaving room to deepen relationships and expand fee generation.
Commercial Franchise And Operating LeverageHigher-quality commercial loan growth can expand the earning-asset base while relationship banking supports deposits and ancillary fees. Management's expense discipline and positive operating leverage could translate growth into stronger returns and support the long-term ROTCE target.
Bears Say
Higher Nonperforming Assets And Credit LossesThe rise in problem assets and charge-offs signals greater credit-cost sensitivity, even though management linked the increase to three idiosyncratic credits. Further deterioration in real estate, consumer goods or agriculture could reduce earnings and capital generation.
Margin And Deposit-funding PressureKeyCorp's earnings remain exposed to deposit competition, pricing and funding mix. Flat balances or higher deposit costs could limit the benefit of asset repricing and delay targeted margin expansion, particularly as loan growth is concentrated in tighter-spread credits.
Earnings Volatility And Rising LeverageThe historical swing from loss to recovery highlights sensitivity to the banking cycle and operating environment. Recent re-leveraging may reduce financial flexibility if credit costs rise or markets tighten, potentially constraining future capital generation and returns.

Q2 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call emphasized strong core operating performance: double-digit EPS growth, raised guidance for loans and NII, robust loan growth concentrated in higher-credit-quality commercial clients, record wealth AUM, meaningful fee momentum in payments and wealth, and continued capital returns (share repurchases). Offsetting these positives were a smaller-than-expected NIM improvement driven by timing and mix effects, modestly higher NPAs tied to a few idiosyncratic credits, and some volatility in investment banking fees and servicing income. Management provided clear explanations for the shortfalls, raised full-year targets, and reiterated multi-year ROTCE targets, suggesting confidence in execution despite near-term headwinds.View all GB:0JQR earnings summaries0JQR Stock 12 Month Forecast
