For years, federal aviation regulators, lawmakers, and air safety advocates alike have warned about the outdated technology and other problems with the pilot-alert system, Andrew Tangel, Micah Maidenberg, and Alison Sider of The Wall Street Journal report. According to the Transportation Department’s most recent budget request for the Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, the technology that support the FAA’s Notice to Air Missions, Notams, alert system is "failing vintage hardware." The Notam system broke down on Wednesday, leading to the FAA to halt domestic departures for nearly two hours, delaying thousands of flights and causing around 1,300 cancellations. The FAA tried to switch to a backup system at the time, but was unsuccessful, leading to the nationwide "ground stop." Based on its preliminary investigation, the problem with the Notam system was the result of actions taken by "personnel who failed to follow procedures."
