Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 23, 2026|% Change Since:-2.73%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral

The call was cautiously positive, supported by $32.9 million of net income, deposit growth, a stronger loan pipeline, cost control, slower credit migration, and a favorable 2027 outlook. These positives were balanced by competitive deposit conditions, a modest loan decline, heavy fourth-quarter CD maturities, delayed nonaccrual resolutions, and elevated classified loans subject to court proceedings.

Company Guidance

Management expects just under $1.7 billion of CDs maturing in the fourth quarter, with a weighted average yield of 3.81% and rollovers likely to come on anywhere between 3.75%-4%; fourth-quarter expenses are expected to be somewhere between $23 million and $24 million. Management said the pipeline seems to be very solid and is very hopeful that in the fourth quarter to have good, solid growth, with a stronger pipeline and hopefully by Q4 a couple of large loans disposed, although this totally depends on the court decision. Deposit-market competition will likely go into the year 2027, while management expects a strong 2027 economy and relatively stable interest rate environment and is looking forward to a good 2027 year; if the Fed fund is going to adjust higher, it will further benefit net interest margin.

  • Third-Quarter Net IncomePreferred Bank reported third-quarter net income of $32.9 million, or $2.73 per share. Results included a $2.1 million recovery of interest income that negatively affected the quarter.
  • Deposit Growth and Fourth-Quarter Starting PointDeposits grew by $77 million, or 1.2%, on a linked-quarter basis. Management said the quarter-end deposit balance is a good launch point for the next quarter, with no unusual or transitory factor identified beyond broker deposits maturing and coming on late in the quarter.
  • Solid Loan PipelineAlthough loans declined during the quarter, management said the pipeline now seems very solid and expressed hope for good, solid loan growth in the fourth quarter.
  • Asset-Sensitive Net Interest Margin PositionReported net interest margin was 3.49%; without the $2.1 million interest income adjustment, it would have been 3.60%. Management expects stable interest rate conditions and said a higher federal funds rate would further benefit net interest margin because Preferred Bank is asset-sensitive.
  • Slower Credit MigrationManagement said the pace of credit migration appears to have slowed or subsided. Only $20 million of additional credit was classified as substandard while remaining on accrual status, with the rest included in nonaccrual.
  • Consistent Overhead Cost ControlManagement highlighted consistent overhead cost control despite an inflationary period. Third-quarter expenses declined due primarily to lower professional services expenses, especially legal fees, while incentive compensation accrual was also lower. Fourth-quarter expenses are expected to be between $23 million and $24 million.
  • Deposit Cost DisciplineTotal deposit costs declined by 3 basis points in a very difficult rate environment. Management attributed this to discipline in controlling deposit costs and said it is focused on keeping costs under control.
  • Non-Interest Income InitiativesManagement said it is constantly looking for opportunities to gradually improve non-interest income.
  • Positive 2027 Operating OutlookManagement expressed confidence in a strong 2027 economy and relatively stable interest rate environment and said it is looking forward to a good 2027 year.
  • Potential Credit Resolution ProgressManagement said bankruptcy proceedings are heading in the right direction, several bankruptcy courts had approved property sales, and it hoped that a couple of large loans could be disposed of by the fourth quarter, subject to court decisions.
