Q4 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q4 2026
Earnings Call Date:Apr 16, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented a solid operational and financial performance with broad-based sales growth, share gains, strong free cash flow and continued investment in value, quality, colleagues and sustainability. Management upgraded medium-term cash guidance and committed to further shareholder returns while retaining a strong balance sheet. Headline risks relate to elevated operating cost inflation, one-off adjusting charges, modest profit growth relative to inflation, and geopolitical uncertainty that widened next-year guidance. On balance the positives (market share gains, cash generation, reinvestment capability and new revenue streams) materially outweigh the negatives.
Company Guidance
Management guided group adjusted operating profit of £3.0–£3.3bn for the year ahead, with free cash flow expected to sit within the upgraded medium‑term range of £1.5–£2.0bn per year; they expect c.£1.6bn of capital expenditure, announced a further £750m share buyback, and reiterated a roughly 50% dividend payout policy (proposed final dividend 9.7p, full‑year 14.5p, +5.8%). They plan to unlock a further £500m of Save to Invest savings next year, while highlighting balance‑sheet metrics of net debt £10.56bn (net debt/EBITDA 2.1x) and fixed‑charge cover 4.1x; last year’s free cash flow was £1.96bn (up 12%) and the group returned £2.4bn to shareholders this year (total buybacks since Oct‑2021 £4.3bn at an average £3.17).
Market Share and Customer Satisfaction Gains
Reached highest market share in a decade with UK market share at 28.5% (total share gain of 120 bps over three years) and Ireland at 24.2% (+32 bps year). Net Promoter Score improved ahead of competitors, with better value perception driving sustained volume growth.
Top-Line Growth
Group sales grew 4.3% at constant exchange rates (like-for-like sales +3.5%), with UK & Ireland total sales growth of 5% and like-for-like growth across most channels (UK food LFL +5.2%, fresh food +6.9%).
Profitability and EPS Progress
Group adjusted operating profit was GBP 3.15 billion (up c.0.6% at constant rates; +0.8% at actual rates). Headline earnings per share increased 6% to 29p.
Strong Free Cash Flow and Upgraded Cash Guidance
Free cash flow of GBP 1.96 billion (up 12% year-on-year and above the upper end of guidance). Upgraded medium-term free cash flow guidance to GBP 1.5–2.0 billion per year.
Shareholder Returns
Returned GBP 2.4 billion to shareholders this year via dividends and buybacks; announced a further GBP 750 million share buyback. Since Oct 2021, repurchased GBP 4.3 billion of shares at an average price of GBP 3.17.
Investment in Value, Quality and New Revenue Streams
Expanded value initiatives (3,000 everyday low prices, >10,000 Clubcard prices, >600 Aldi Price Match lines) and invested in quality/innovation (Finest sales ~+15%). Whoosh quick commerce generated over GBP 400 million of sales and grew 51% in the UK.
Operational Efficiency and Save to Invest
Save to Invest contributed approximately GBP 535 million to adjusted operating profit this year and has unlocked c. GBP 2.2 billion over the last four years; target to unlock a further GBP 500 million next year.
Sustainability and Colleague Investment
Scope 1 & 2 emissions reduced by 68% vs 2015 baseline (ahead of 60% target). Invested GBP 209 million in UK store colleague pay (total hourly pay +43% over five years), announced GBP 65 million performance award, and paid GBP 134 million via Save As You Earn to ~22,000 colleagues.
