Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 29, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive overall. Samsung reported record company-wide revenue and operating profit, robust AI-related memory demand, significant HBM4 growth, expanding long-term contracts, improving foundry performance, higher shareholder returns and an expectation of another record year in 2027. These positives outweighed challenges including foreign-exchange pressure, rising component and memory costs, weak mobile and display demand, smartphone volume declines and continued capacity constraints.
Company Guidance
Samsung expects fourth-quarter company-wide earnings growth supported by the DS division; DRAM Q-o-Q bit growth is expected to increase by a mid- to high teen percentage and NAND by a mid-teens increase, Foundry expects double-digit revenue growth both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, and MX revenue and profit are expected to decline quarter-on-quarter. For 2026, total CapEx is expected to reach KRW 84.4 trillion, or KRW 31.7 trillion increase from last year, including KRW 76.8 trillion for the Display DS division and KRW 3.9 trillion for the Display business. In 2027, Samsung expects to exceed its 2026 performance and achieve another year of record results; HBM4E mass production is planned in the first half of next year with ramp up of mass volume in the second half, high-speed DDR5 demand is targeted at 8,000 mega bps and above performance, 2-nano project orders are expected to more than double in 2026 versus the prior year, and all nodes below 8-nano are projected to be running at over 100% utilization. Estimated 2026 total shareholder returns are KRW 90 trillion to KRW 110 trillion, with KRW 35 trillion already planned or completed and remaining funds of KRW 55 trillion to KRW 75 trillion.
Record Company-Wide Revenue and Operating Profit
Samsung Electronics reached new highs in both revenue and operating profit for the fourth consecutive quarter, with total revenue of KRW 195.3 trillion, up 14% sequentially, and operating profit of KRW 107.4 trillion, up 20% sequentially. The company became the first global tech company to post quarterly operating profit above KRW 100 trillion.
Improved Margins, Net Profit and Earnings Per Share
Operating margin improved to 55% from 52% in the prior quarter. Net profit rose 5% sequentially to KRW 75.1 trillion, while EPS reached KRW 11,462 for common shares and KRW 11,492 for preferred shares, both up 6% from the previous quarter.
Memory Delivered a Quarterly Record
The Memory business achieved another quarterly record, supported by strong server demand and expanded HBM4 sales. DRAM shipments increased by a low to mid-single-digit percentage quarter-on-quarter, NAND shipments increased by mid-single-digit percentages, DRAM ASP rose by 20% level, and NAND ASP increased by the high-teens percentages.
Strong HBM4 Momentum and Market Share Progress
HBM4 sales increased by more than threefold quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter, and HBM4 represented 60% of total HBM sales. Samsung stated that it had already achieved its goal of bringing HBM market share in line with its overall DRAM market share, ahead of the original target of the second half of the year. The company was also the first in the world to ship HBM4E samples in May and reported positive initial feedback.
HBM Supply for 2027 Already Sold Out
Samsung stated that its 2027 HBM supply volume is already sold out at an agreed target price reflecting product competitiveness, while key customers continue to request additional supply.
AI-Driven Memory Demand and Product Expansion
Demand for memory continued to grow with the spread of Agentic AI and AI infrastructure investment. Samsung plans to increase fourth-quarter DRAM bit growth by a mid- to high teen percentage and NAND bit growth by a mid-teens percentage, while expanding sales of HBM, server DRAM, server SSDs, high-density QLC SSDs and PCIe Gen 6 server SSDs.
Long-Term Memory Contract Coverage Expanding
Samsung has concluded multiyear supply contracts with 10 major accounts and is in discussions with 10 other major accounts, with several negotiations near the final phase. The company said its target of increasing multiyear contract coverage to 60% to 70% of mid- to long-term capacity is gaining greater visibility, and demand for contract extensions and additional supply has been stronger than initially expected.
Foundry Earnings Recovery and Advanced-Node Growth
Foundry revenue increased quarter-on-quarter, driven by 4-nano HBM base-die sales and higher advanced-node sales to global customers, while earnings improved significantly. Samsung expects fourth-quarter revenue growth in the double digits both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, supported by advanced-node revenue, improved utilization and sales growth at key U.S. and Chinese customers.
Foundry Orders and Capacity Expansion
Samsung continued to secure 2-nano orders from large cloud service providers and AI/HPC customers, with the number of 2-nano projects expected to grow by more than double year-on-year in 2026. Demand for nodes below 8-nano is projected to substantially exceed production capacity, with utilization expected to be over 100%. The company is pursuing additional capacity in the U.S. and Korea, including logic fabs and advanced packaging, while Taylor Fab 1 cleanroom operations and equipment installation are proceeding as planned.
System LSI Revenue Growth and New Customer Wins
System LSI continued its quarterly revenue growth, driven by adoption of its SoC in new models and expanded sales of 200 megapixel image sensors. The business established partnerships with new custom SoC customers and secured projects, while Exynos 2700 development and production were reported to be proceeding according to schedule.
Display Business Improved Quarterly Performance
Mobile display revenue and profit increased quarter-on-quarter due to timely supply for new products from major customers. Large-display earnings also improved quarter-on-quarter, supported by high-end products and cost reduction.
Foldable and Premium Mobile Product Momentum
The MX business generated Q3 revenue of KRW 37.3 trillion, while the combined operating loss across MX and Networks was KRW 0.6 trillion. New flagship launches, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Watch Ultra 2, drove revenue growth quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year. Foldable sales volume and revenue increased year-on-year, and profit improved quarter-on-quarter due to higher ASPs from an improved flagship sales mix.
Shareholder Returns and Dividend Approval
The Board approved a third-quarter cash dividend of KRW 4,601 per common and preferred share, including the regular dividend of KRW 376 per share. Total third-quarter dividends are expected to be KRW 30 trillion, scheduled for payment in November.
Planned 2026 Shareholder Returns
Of the estimated KRW 90 trillion to KRW 110 trillion in total shareholder returns for 2026, KRW 35 trillion is already planned or completed, leaving anticipated remaining funds of KRW 55 trillion to KRW 75 trillion. Samsung plans to return the remaining amount through cash dividends and a substantial share repurchase and cancellation program.
Positive 2027 Company-Wide Outlook
Samsung expects the semiconductor market to remain strong in 2027, supported by historic AI investment and supply constraints. The company expects to exceed its 2026 performance and achieve another year of record results, with memory demand expected to far exceed supply and foundry growth expected to accelerate.
Higher Capital Investment for AI and Future Growth
Third-quarter CapEx was KRW 29 trillion, up KRW 12.2 trillion quarter-on-quarter and KRW 19.8 trillion year-on-year. The first nine months totaled KRW 56.9 trillion, up KRW 24.7 trillion year-on-year. Full-year 2026 CapEx is expected to reach KRW 84.4 trillion, an increase of KRW 31.7 trillion from last year, primarily to expand memory capacity, AI infrastructure, the Taylor foundry fab and display production lines.
Harman Growth and Portfolio Expansion
Harman continued to deliver results despite tariff risks and rising memory prices. Telematics supplies to Volkswagen and other customers supported stable automotive results, while strong JBL portable speaker sales and new product launches supported consumer-audio revenue growth. Harman is also expanding its premium portfolio through Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz and other brands.
