Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was predominantly positive, supported by record origination volume, 119% growth in graduate originations, the addition of a second strategic funding partner, improving early loss-mitigation indicators, continued share repurchases and solid capital and liquidity. The main negatives were higher charge-off guidance, elevated delinquency and credit provisions, higher operating expenses, peak-season delays and the decision to defer a planned loan sale that reduced 2026 EPS guidance. Management nevertheless expressed confidence in future origination growth, expense management, recovery performance and the flexibility of its funding strategy.
Sallie Mae expects full year originations to be in line with guidance of 12% to 14% growth, full year net charge offs of $400 million to $420 million with a midpoint $45 million higher than that of our original range, and full year 2026 EPS of $1.95 to $2.05 a share; the company reaffirmed its non interest expense and origination guidance, expects to land within its non interest expense guidance range for the year, and said non-interest expense will now be closer to the high end of the range. The company expects to exhaust most of its current share repurchase authorization before the end of the year, believes meaningful loan sales will be a part of its 2027 plan and beyond, and said its base case for next year is flat balance sheet to maybe single digit growth of the balance sheet, with premiums that are above sort of a minimum threshold level.
- Record Origination VolumeThird-quarter loan originations were $3.4 billion, representing 15% growth over the year-ago quarter and the highest quarterly origination volume in Sallie Mae's history. Management expects stronger-than-normal volume to continue into the fourth quarter and reaffirmed full-year origination growth guidance of 12% to 14%.
- Strong Graduate Loan GrowthThird-quarter graduate loan originations increased 119% year over year. The average FICO score for graduate originations was 9 points higher than the overall average of new originations in the portfolio.
- Sixth Street Strategic PartnershipSallie Mae completed a strategic partnership with Sixth Street for an initial three-year term. Sixth Street committed to purchase a minimum of $1.5 billion in newly originated private education loans annually, with the first year including an initial seed portfolio of $600 million in seasoned loans. Together with KKR, the partnerships provide additional origination capacity, scalable funding and recurring program management and servicing fees.
- Expanded Graduate Product CapabilitiesManagement said it had invested in new products, credit programs, marketing strategies and other capabilities to compete for graduate loan customers after Plus reform. The company has also begun developing additional flow capabilities for graduate loan products.
- Positive Early Loss-Mitigation IndicatorsThe loan modification program continued to outperform expectations, while results in the borrower segment not affected by third-party debt resolution practices were in line with or slightly better than expectations. Using AI to review relevant collection and recovery calls, Sallie Mae observed a 50% decline in borrower mentions of the relevant players and practices during October month to date.
- Higher Early Recoveries From Impacted BorrowersSallie Mae reported its first few recoveries from borrowers affected by the third-party debt resolution practices through its ENHANCE strategies. Although the sample was very small, management said recovery rates were meaningfully higher than for its historically charged-off customers.
- Other Income Growth From Partnerships and ServicingThird-quarter net interest income was $339 million and other income was $46 million. Compared with the prior-year quarter, other income increased by $15 million, driven by growth in recurring program management fees from the strategic partnership business and year-over-year growth in servicing fee revenue.
- Improved Net Interest MarginThird-quarter net interest margin was 4.85%, up 10 basis points from the prior quarter. The company extended the duration of its funding to better align with the growing proportion of fixed-rate loans, increasing the weighted average life of deposits to 37 months from 23 months at the end of 2025 and moving the company into a more neutral interest-rate-risk position.
- Disciplined Underwriting and Reserve RateThe reserve rate was 5.89% at quarter end, down 4 basis points from the prior-year period. Management attributed the reduction to disciplined underwriting and ongoing work to optimize loss-mitigation strategies.
- Expense Management and Restructuring AlignmentManagement said non-interest expense performance year to date was better than original expectations. The October 1 restructuring plan is intended to align resources with strategic priorities and improve operating efficiency, and the company expects to absorb the restructuring charges within its full-year guidance range while returning operating expense growth to more normalized levels in 2027.
- Continued Share RepurchasesDuring the third quarter, Sallie Mae repurchased 5.1 million shares at an average price of $25.06. Since the beginning of the year, it has repurchased 18.1 million shares at an average purchase price of $23.02, representing 9% of shares outstanding.
- Solid Liquidity and Capital PositionAt quarter end, liquidity was 15% of total assets, total risk-based capital was 12.5% and common equity Tier 1 capital was 11.2%. Management said the balance sheet and capital buffers were in great shape and remained above regulatory thresholds.
- Strategic Flexibility in Funding and Loan SalesBecause the indicated premium on a potential loan sale was below the company's minimum acceptable threshold, Sallie Mae chose to retain the loans on its balance sheet and earn at roughly 5% NIM over time. Management said the bank's low-cost matched funding and strategic partnerships model allow it to remain selective rather than be compelled to act based on market conditions.
- Ongoing Shareholder Return and Loan-Sale PlansManagement does not expect the decision to defer the final 2026 loan sale to substantially affect 2026 share buyback activity and still expects to exhaust most of its current repurchase authorization before year end. The company currently believes meaningful loan sales will be part of its 2027 plan and beyond.
- Forward Flow Portfolio ActivityThe held-for-sale portfolio was approximately $1.44 billion at September 30, reflecting seasonal origination volume, KKR forward-flow commitments and the $600 million Sixth Street seed portfolio. A portion of the seed portfolio closed in the third quarter, with the remainder expected to close in the early part of the fourth quarter; the company expects the full gain on sale for the forward-flow portfolio to be realized in the fourth quarter.
