Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Vertical Integration & DiversificationCSN's integrated model—steelmaking plus iron ore extraction and downstream activities—creates durable vertical integration. Capturing value across extraction, processing and manufacturing reduces reliance on third-party inputs, supports margin resilience and diversifies cyclical exposure across markets.
Strong Operating MarginsSustained double-digit EBITDA and mid-single-digit EBIT margins indicate underlying operational competitiveness. These margins provide structural capacity to cover variable costs, support reinvestment or deleveraging when commodity cycles recover, and help absorb price and mix volatility over medium term.
Substantial Asset Base; Improved Short-term LiquidityA large asset base and modest improvement in current-liability metrics bolster refinancing and restructuring options. Substantial assets can be collateral for funding, while eased short-term liquidity pressure reduces near-term default risk, giving management time to address leverage and cash generation issues.
Bears Say
High And Rising LeverageLeverage near 4x reduces financial flexibility and raises interest burden, limiting capacity to invest or ride out commodity downturns. The marked rise since 2021 erodes the balance-sheet buffer and increases refinancing and covenant risk if cash generation does not recover within a sustained period.
Negative Operating And Free Cash FlowA reversal to negative operating and free cash flows signals a structural funding gap, requiring external financing or asset sales to meet obligations. Persistent negative cash generation exacerbates leverage, constrains capital expenditure and heightens default likelihood absent durable margin or working-capital improvements.
Sustained Net Losses & Revenue WeaknessOngoing net losses and sharp revenue deterioration undermine retained earnings and shareholder equity, contributing to negative ROE (~-12.8%). Persistent losses reduce internal funding for operations and debt reduction, making recovery reliant on cyclical market improvement or significant operational changes.

Company Description
Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional
Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) operates as an integrated steel manufacturer, holding a significant presence across Brazil and Latin America. Its operations are diversified across five key divisions: Steel, Mining, Logistics, Energy, and Cement. CSN’s comprehensive steel product range includes various flat steel offerings, such as specialized slabs (high, medium, low carbon, micro-alloyed, ultra-low-carbon, and interstitial free types). The company also provides hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils and sheets, galvanized products, and tin mill products, which are essentially flat-rolled low-carbon steel. Furthermore, CSN manufactures structural steel shapes like profiles, channels, UPE sections, and steel sleepers. These products serve a wide array of industries, including distribution, packaging, automotive, home appliances, and construction. In its mining segment, CSN extracts iron ore from the Casa de Pedra and Engenho mines near Congonhas, Brazil, and limestone and dolomite from the Bocaina mine in Arcos, both located in Minas Gerais state. The company additionally produces tin. Complementing these activities, CSN manages its own railway and port infrastructure, facilitating logistics. Its cement production is sold to a diverse customer base, including construction material stores, home centers, concrete producers, construction companies, mortar industries, and cement artifact manufacturers. Power generation is also a component of its business, with electricity produced from thermoelectric co-generation and hydroelectric plants. CSN also exports its products to international markets. Founded in 1941 and headquartered in São Paulo, Brazil, Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional functions as a subsidiary of Vicunha Aços S.A.
