Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 15, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call had a positive but measured tone. Management highlighted strong demand, improving safety and driver hiring, record Dedicated pipelines, Intermodal volume growth, ICS margin expansion, customer trust, and confidence in pricing-led margin repair. These positives were partly offset by a 5% sequential decline in operating income, more than $50 million of cost headwinds, elevated medical and claims costs, driver and capacity constraints, below-expectation Dedicated results, and the time required for pricing actions to recover inflationary costs. Overall, the number and significance of the operational and growth positives outweighed the near-term challenges.
Company Guidance
J.B. Hunt expects full-year 2026 CapEx to remain approximately $700 million, with CapEx trending higher in Q4; Dedicated gross sales target 1,000 to 1,200 new trucks, with fleet growth expected to continue and some modest margin pressure associated with starting up new accounts, which historically take roughly 6 months to reach targeted profitability; Final Mile is expecting a modest peak season; and Intermodal repricing is expected to cover about 10% of volume in the fourth quarter, followed by 30% of volume in each of the first 3 quarters of the year. Management did not provide a pricing forecast, saying increases are more than what it has been, but said it expects to achieve rate increases that cover inflationary expense, improve margins, and achieve its margin target coming out of next year.
Revenue and Earnings Increased Year Over Year
Third-quarter GAAP total revenue increased 20%, operating income increased 2%, and diluted earnings per share increased 3% versus the prior-year period. Management attributed the results to strong demand and disciplined execution.
Improving Safety Performance
Year-to-date safety performance, measured by DOT-preventable accidents per million miles, continued to best the prior year's record. Management also noted that this builds on three consecutive record years.
Driver Hiring Momentum Improved
Driver hiring success improved throughout the quarter, and management reported a strong pipeline of drivers. The company said the recruiting team is producing close to record results while operating with a team 30% below its COVID-era peak.
Customer Demand and Commercial Pipelines Remained Strong
Demand across the company's portfolio of services continued to outpace the broader market. Customer retention remained strong, commercial pipelines continued to grow, and customers increasingly engaged with J.B. Hunt on network design, transportation procurement, and long-term capacity planning.
Dedicated New Truck Sales and Pipeline Reached Strong Levels
Dedicated sold approximately 425 trucks of new deals in the quarter, bringing year-to-date new sales to 970 trucks versus the full-year target of 1,000 to 1,200 trucks. The pipeline remained at record levels, September pricing activity was up almost 50% year over year, and engineered design requests were near record levels.
Dedicated Fleet Growth Began to Materialize
Management said the wave of new Dedicated truck growth had begun to materialize, supported by multiple quarters of strong truck sales and a record pipeline. Customers were also seeking additional Dedicated capacity because third-party capacity had proven less reliable.
ICS Gross Margin Expanded
ICS gross margin expanded almost 200 basis points sequentially, supported by pricing adjustments designed to reflect the value created and current market conditions. Management said the business continued to have opportunities to grow market share through its service, platform, and customer relationships.
JBT Pricing Actions Improved Profitability
JBT implemented new rates throughout the third quarter after addressing rates at which capacity could no longer be sourced in the market. Some volume that had churned returned through mini bids, and management said the business had quickly addressed its profitability problems from the second quarter.
Intermodal Volumes Set Quarterly Records
Intermodal volumes increased 8% year over year, with monthly growth of 9% in July, 8% in August, and 9% in September. Eastern network volume increased 18%, while transcontinental volume increased 1%.
Intermodal Customer Demand Exceeded Available Capacity
Management said customer demand for Intermodal capacity was outpacing available capacity, with strong road-to-rail conversion opportunities in the East. The company was prioritizing lanes and freight believed to be sustainable over the long term.
Strong Intermodal Service Position and Customer Ranking
J.B. Hunt was ranked America's number one intermodal provider for the seventh consecutive JOC survey. Management said service levels, operational excellence, and significant mini-bid activity were helping the company improve both its share and pricing position.
Long-Term Intermodal Conversion Opportunity
Management said its bid and data warehouse indicated 7 million to 11 million shipments were available for conversion from Highway to Intermodal. Customers were actively discussing long-term conversion, and management expected secular growth opportunities to continue.
Final Mile Demand and Pipeline Remained Encouraging
Final Mile fulfillment demand remained strong, with expansion underway with customers in that vertical. Demand in furniture, exercise equipment, and appliances remained stable, and the Final Mile sales pipeline continued to be encouraging.
Structural Cost Improvements Were Maintained
Management said the company had not given back the structural cost improvements achieved through its lowering cost-to-serve initiative.
Capital Allocation Remained Return Focused
Net capital expenditures were $146 million in the quarter, primarily for replacement needs, while full-year capital expenditures remained targeted at approximately $700 million. The company repurchased approximately $174 million of stock, or more than 700,000 shares, and reiterated its commitment to an investment-grade balance sheet, a growing dividend, and opportunistic repurchases.
Return on Invested Capital Improved
On a trailing 12-month basis, operating income was reported as up 16% or 17%. Average invested capital in the third quarter was approximately $400 million lower year over year, contributing to an approximately 200-basis-point improvement in return on invested capital.
Operational and Workforce Productivity Investments Showed Progress
The company reported that salaried office headcount was down approximately 4.5% year over year in the third quarter while driver count was up 3.5%. Management said technology investments had made the driver recruiting group more productive and were helping support business growth.
Management Expressed Confidence in Margin Repair
Management said pricing conversations were becoming more realistic as customers recognized higher capacity and operating costs. The company expressed confidence that it could achieve rate increases covering inflationary expenses while improving margins and reaching its margin target coming out of next year.
Large Addressable Market and Disciplined Growth Strategy
Management characterized J.B. Hunt as a $13 billion to $14 billion revenue organization serving an addressable market of approximately $600 billion. The company said each of its five business units had significant growth opportunities and that growth would continue to be evaluated against targeted returns.
