Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 26, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive overall. The Hartford reported solid core earnings, a 17.9% trailing 12-month core earnings ROE, growth in Business Insurance and Employee Benefits, strong small business profitability and digital capabilities, higher investment income, a 12% dividend increase, and share repurchases. These strengths outweighed challenges including workers' compensation frequency, catastrophe losses, competitive pressure, declining personal auto premium, higher disability and group life loss ratios, and expected modest 2027 dilution from the Equitable acquisition.
Company Guidance
Management said Employee Benefits remains a 6% to 7% business long term, with the Equitable acquisition adding $500 million in annual premium, approximately $30 million of annual intangible asset amortization, integration costs probably in the $30 million-ish range, maybe $40 million, and a core earnings impact that is expected to be modestly dilutive in 2027 and to improve each year as the business integrates and scales; the business is in the 15% to 16% return on tangible range and had a 6.9 margin on a 9 month basis. Small business is expected to grow at a similar pace, with 78% straight through expected to continue to improve, while workers' compensation is not expected to have sort of another year of elevated frequency in 2027 as of today; the 5% medical severity starting point has not changed, paid family and medical leave is receiving mid double digit rate increases, higher reinvestment rates will benefit net investment income going forward, and the common quarterly dividend was increased 12% to $0.67 per share.
Strong Core Earnings and Returns
Third quarter core earnings were $956 million, or $3.50 per diluted share, with a trailing 12-month core earnings ROE of 17.9%. Trailing 12-month net income ROE was 25%, including earnings from Hartford Funds.
Book Value Growth
Book value per share excluding AOCI was $82.47, increasing 12% from year end and 16% from a year ago.
Business Insurance Growth and Profitability
Business Insurance delivered 6% written premium growth and a 90.1 underlying combined ratio, with core earnings of $731 million.
Small Business Performance and Digital Leadership
Small business written premium grew 7% with an underlying combined ratio of 85.2. The Hartford reported that 78% of small business submissions are bindable straight through, an all-time high and estimated to be 5 to 10 points better than its leading competitor. Kinova ranked The Hartford first for small business digital experience for the eighth consecutive year, with a 20-point lead over the next carrier.
Small Business Expansion in E&S Binding
E&S binding is on pace to reach $500 million by year end, up from less than $100 million five years ago.
Middle Market Premium Growth
Middle and large business written premium grew 3%, including 5% growth in middle market.
Global Specialty Growth and Underwriting Results
Global Specialty written premium grew 7%, driven by Global Re, with an underlying combined ratio of 86.1, described as relatively consistent with the prior year.
Business Insurance Expense Improvement
The Business Insurance expense ratio improved 1.1 points to 30.0, driven by earned premium growth and lower staffing costs, partially offset by higher technology costs.
Personal Insurance Combined Ratio Improvement
Personal Insurance had an underlying combined ratio of 87.1, improving 2.9 points year over year as earned pricing increases outpaced loss cost trends in auto and home.
Homeowners Growth
Homeowners written premium grew 6%, and new business growth was 20% following the rollout of the new product to the agency channel.
Employee Benefits Premium Growth and Persistency
Employee Benefits fully insured premiums grew 4%, supported by strong new business sales, increased exposure on existing accounts, and book persistency above 90%.
Employee Benefits Margin Within Long-Term Range
Employee Benefits core earnings were $120 million, with a core earnings margin of 6.4%, within the company's long-term range of 6% to 7%. The nine-month margin was 6.9%.
Equitable Employee Benefits Acquisition
The Hartford closed the acquisition of Equitable's employee benefits business. The acquired business is expected to contribute approximately $500 million in annual premium across group life, disability, and other supplemental products, including dental and vision, and adds modern integrated technology serving small and mid-sized employers.
Investment Income Growth
Net investment income was $850 million, up $95 million, or 13%, from the third quarter of 2025, driven by higher income from limited partnerships and other alternative investments and a higher level of invested assets. Excluding limited partnerships, the annualized portfolio yield was 4.6% before tax.
Limited Partnership Investment Returns
Annualized limited partnership returns were 10.2% before tax and 7.8% year to date, benefiting from particularly strong performance in energy transition funds.
Dividend Increase and Capital Generation
The company increased its common quarterly dividend by 12% to $0.67 per share, payable January 5, 2027. Annual dividend increases have averaged approximately 11% over the past decade.
Share Repurchases
The Hartford repurchased 3.4 million shares during the quarter for $475 million and had $4.37 billion remaining on its share repurchase authorization as of September 30.
Favorable Reserve Development
Favorable prior-year development was $594 million before tax, including a $497 million benefit from commuting the A&E adverse development cover. Core favorable prior-year development was $97 million, driven by reserve reductions in workers' compensation, commercial property, and personal insurance.
Expense and Efficiency Improvements
Staffing costs declined across the business, and management said overall cost per head was coming down while the company continued investing in its franchises and strategic initiatives.
Leadership Succession Plan
The company described the CEO transition as thoughtful and planned, with strategy, priorities, and commitment to disciplined execution unchanged. Christopher Swift said he would remain fully engaged during the transition and expressed confidence in Adin Morris Tooker's leadership.
Technology and AI Investment
The Hartford has modernized core platforms, moved applications and data to the cloud, and built a foundation to embed AI in underwriting, claims, and service. Management said the company will continue investing in small commercial technology and is prepared for changes in agentic AI.
Stable Commercial Auto and Workers' Compensation Pricing
Commercial auto pricing remained strong and above loss trend. Workers' compensation pricing improved slightly and remained positive, while the company said the starting point for medical severity remained 5%.
Reserve Position in Commercial Auto and General Liability
The company conducted its quarterly reserve review and did not adjust booked reserves for commercial auto and general liability, stating that the review substantiated the existing reserve position.
