Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Revenue & ProfitabilityConsistent multi-year revenue growth with mid‑teens EBITDA margins and ~24% ROE indicates durable operating leverage and efficient capital use. These fundamentals support sustainable cash generation and reinvestment capacity across the post‑acute cycle over the next several quarters.
Development PipelineA sizable multi‑year development pipeline and active bed additions create structural capacity growth and geographic expansion optionality. Delivered incremental beds raise revenue potential and market share over time, enabling unit-level returns to compound as occupancy normalizes.
Workforce & Cost ControlSustained improvements in turnover and lower premium/contract labor indicate structural workforce stabilization, reducing variable labor costs and improving service consistency. This strengthens margins, clinical outcomes and throughput durability, supporting stable reimbursements and patient flow.
Bears Say
Weak FCF ConversionA material TTM decline in free cash flow versus net income suggests elevated capex, working capital or one‑time cash uses that reduce financial flexibility. Over 2–6 months this can constrain buybacks, dividend capacity or incremental investment despite healthy operating cash flow.
Regulatory & MA RiskOngoing regulatory rollouts and shifting Medicare Advantage utilization are structural sources of revenue and operational risk. Changes to payment rules or utilization management can alter admissions, case mix and reimbursement over several quarters, pressuring volume and conversion rates.
Capital Intensity & Funding CostA heavy growth CapEx plan alongside refinancing into higher‑coupon, longer‑dated debt raises interest expense and cash service requirements. Higher funding costs plus substantial development spending can compress free cash flow and leverage flexibility for strategic moves over the medium term.

Encompass Health
Encompass Health Corporation delivers a range of post-acute healthcare services across the United States, offered both in dedicated facilities and directly within patients' homes. The company's operations are divided into two primary divisions: Inpatient Rehabilitation, and Home Health and Hospice. Its Inpatient Rehabilitation division specializes in providing focused recovery treatment, available on an inpatient or outpatient basis. This care is designed for individuals recuperating from significant health challenges such as strokes, neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary issues, brain and spinal cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations. The Home Health and Hospice segment primarily serves the Southeast and Texas regions. Within this segment, home health services encompass a variety of Medicare-certified care options for adult patients, including skilled nursing, medical social work, home health aide assistance, and various therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Hospice services, on the other hand, provide in-home comfort and support for terminally ill patients and their families. As of June 1, 2022, Encompass Health maintained a substantial network, managing 149 hospitals, 252 home health locations, and 99 hospice locations spread across 42 U.S. states and Puerto Rico.
