Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2026
Earnings Call Date:Aug 05, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive overall. Management reported NAV per share growth, substantially higher cash realizations, a strong cash balance, progress in Pfizer's obesity programs, improved Oxford Nanopore performance, broad portfolio milestones, and expansion of the third-party capital platform. These positives outweighed the failed offer process, remaining clinical and valuation risks, higher overheads, the 40% share price discount, and the selective funding environment.
Company Guidance
Management said Oxford Nanopore remains on track for EBIT break-even in full-year 2027 and positive free cash flow in 2028, while Pfizer’s launch is targeted in 2028 and royalties are anticipated to begin in 2028 if development and launch proceed to the plan that is set out here; two berobenatide phase III studies are expected to reach primary completion in October 2027, the berobenatide and amylin combination’s primary completion is currently expected in April 2027, and Oxa’s first scalable commercial deployment is planned before the end of 2027. IP Group remains on track for its GBP 250 million target by the end of 2027, with a healthy pipeline of maturing assets and potential realization opportunities over the next 12-18 months, expects the initial Aberdeen portfolio to be up and running by the end of the year, plans to begin investing the GBP 50 million IP Group Climate Catalyst Fund by the end of the year, and expects total overheads to be about GBP 17 million.
NAV Per Share Growth
NAV per share increased by about 3% to GBP 1.14 in the first half, taking net asset value above GBP 1 billion. Since the period end, NAV per share increased further to approximately GBP 1.17 as at 11th of September.
Strong Cash Realizations
The group generated GBP 69 million of cash proceeds in the six months, compared with about GBP 30 million in the first half of last year and slightly more than the whole of full year 2025. A further GBP 17 million since June took year-to-date proceeds to GBP 86 million, or the mid-GBP 80 millions.
Progress Toward GBP 250 Million Exit Target
Including post-period-end receipts, total proceeds since the beginning of 2025 reached GBP 154 million, putting the group well over halfway toward its GBP 250 million target by the end of 2027.
Portfolio Funding Validation
Portfolio companies raised over half a billion of third-party capital during the period, while IP Group contributed about 5%. Management described this as external evidence that other investors are prepared to commit substantial capital as the companies progress.
Pfizer Obesity Programs De-risked
Positive clinical data for berobenatide showed competitive weight loss efficacy alongside favorable tolerability and supported the potential for a monthly maintenance regimen. The berobenatide and amylin combination advanced into phase IIb, the primary driver of a GBP 27 million increase in the value of the royalty interest to just over GBP 150 million.
Pfizer Development Timetable Advanced
Pfizer is progressing 10 phase III studies during the year, with launch targeted in 2028. Two berobenatide phase III studies are expected to reach primary completion in October 2027, while recruitment across essentially all berobenatide phase III studies was reported as close to completion.
Broad Pfizer Royalty Exposure
The group has economic exposure across approximately six Pfizer patent areas, including the lead injectable program, combination therapies, potential less-frequent dosing, an amylin monotherapy, and earlier oral and next-generation programs. Management said this provides several possible routes to value rather than exposure to a single binary program.
Oxford Nanopore Revenue Growth and Margin Expansion
Oxford Nanopore reported revenue of GBP 117 million, representing about 12% growth at constant currency. Gross margin increased by 400 basis points to 62%.
Oxford Nanopore Improved Profitability
Oxford Nanopore's adjusted EBITDA loss more than halved to just over GBP 22 million. The company remains on track for EBIT break-even in full-year 2027 and positive free cash flow in 2028.
Oxford Nanopore Commercial and Leadership Progress
Oxford Nanopore strengthened its leadership team, including the appointment of Francis as CEO in March, and adopted a more focused customer-led growth strategy by narrowing its potential competitive areas from 47 to 18. Approximately 40%-45% of revenue generated over the last three years already came from those priority markets.
Oxford Nanopore Cross-Licensing Agreement
A cross-licensing agreement with a global diagnostics company brings $35 million of committed revenue over the next couple of years, plus ongoing royalties that management believes could be substantial. The royalties are not currently included in medium-term guidance, and early adoption could occur as soon as this year.
Broad Portfolio Progress
Quantum Motion, Quantum Circuits, and Oxa completed major funding rounds; First Light Fusion and Mantle8 raised capital; Hysata secured its first commercial electrolyzer order; and Centessa was acquired by Eli Lilly.
Oxa Dubai Joint Venture
Oxa formed Shift, a joint venture with the Dubai Future Foundation, combining Oxa's self-driving software, fleet management platform, and autonomy hardware for ports and airports. The first scalable commercial deployment is planned before the end of 2027.
Hysata Commercial Order
Hysata secured its first binding megawatt-scale order during the first half, with delivery expected in the first half of 2027.
Mission Therapeutics Transaction
Mission Therapeutics' acute kidney injury program was acquired by Dimerix for potential consideration of up to nearly $300 million. The upfront consideration extends Mission's runway for its core Parkinson's program.
Centessa Exit and Returns
Centessa was acquired by Eli Lilly for about $6 billion upfront, with a further $1.5 billion in potential milestones. IP Group's realized IRR was about 24%, with potential additional CVR payments of another GBP 3 million to GBP 4 million.
Hinge Health and Monolith Realizations
Following Hinge Health's 2025 IPO, total proceeds reached GBP 46 million, representing a 50x multiple of invested capital and almost a 50% IRR. Monolith generated around GBP 23 million of proceeds in the year, with a greater than 50% overall IRR.
Therapeutics Milestones
Enterprise Therapeutics met its primary endpoint in a phase II cystic fibrosis trial, showing improved lung function over 28 days compared with placebo. Microbiotica delivered a second positive phase I-B data set in melanoma, and Istesso began dosing a new phase II leramistat study in June.
Quantum Portfolio Funding
Two companies in the quantum portfolio raised significant capital during the period. IP Group and Parkwalk Advisors were early investors, and the group's balance-sheet exposure to quantum companies was worth about GBP 0.02 per share at the half year.
AI-Enabled Computing Portfolio Progress
Lumai's first Iris system began running billion-parameter language models in real time. Intrinsic was described as well capitalized and seeing strong commercial interest in next-generation ReRAM memory, while Quantum Dice is developing photonics for probabilistic computing.
Expansion of Third-Party Capital Platform
The strategic relationship with Aberdeen is moving toward its first investment, with the initial portfolio expected to be up and running by the end of the year. IP Group also launched the GBP 50 million Climate Catalyst Fund with Australia's Clean Energy Finance Corporation, with investment expected to begin by the end of the year. Together with Parkwalk and Hostplus, the group manages around GBP 550 million of third-party capital.
Strong Cash Position
Gross cash was GBP 239 million at the half year and approximately GBP 240 million at the end of June. David Baynes said the GBP 31 million profit had effectively gone into cash, with investments of about GBP 30 million outweighed by exits and costs.
Funding Profile Improved
Approximately 60% of portfolio funding requirements remained for the rest of the year and 19% for the following six months; over the next 12 months, the requirement was about 25%. Management said the funding profile had slightly improved and that there was no wall of funding requirements.
Increased Investment Activity
IP Group had made approximately six balance-sheet investments year to date, compared with about three during the prior year, while continuing to invest through its Parkwalk funds.
Capital Allocation Capacity
Approximately GBP 50 million of realization proceeds was available for future shareholder returns under the board-approved capital allocation policy. Management said it was engaging with shareholders on the appropriate form and timing of capital allocation.
Management and Board Alignment
Michael Queen joined as Chair during the half, and both he and Greg Smith bought shares after the offer period. Management said the board and management were focused on accelerating realizations, sharpening capital allocation, and converting portfolio value into per-share returns.
25-Year Track Record
IP Group marked its 25th anniversary, having invested over GBP 1.5 billion, helped form and support more than 600 companies, and supported companies that created more than 15,000 jobs.
