Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2027
Earnings Call Date:Oct 15, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call was cautiously optimistic but mixed. Management highlighted stable underlying operations, positive expectations for festive-season advertising, strong cash reserves, cost controls, selected sector growth, and continued digital investment. These positives were offset by flat circulation and limited growth, a 20.8% year-on-year increase in newsprint costs, lower digital MAUs, mixed advertising-sector performance, and uncertainty related to geopolitical conditions, weather, elections, and digital monetization. The balance of opportunities and challenges supports a Neutral classification.
Company Guidance
Management said the eight days of shift of the season from September to October would impact advertising by “almost around INR 40 crore,” while the endeavor remains to reach “high single digits to early double digits revenue for the full year for advertisement”; it is “pretty optimistic on the next two quarters also.” Newsprint prices are expected to go down by “maybe 2% or 3%, but not more than that” in next Q3 and Q4, versus an “18%-20%” impact year-on-year, while circulation is “around 38 lakh copies” and digital app pricing is being tested from INR 149 to INR 199. FMCG was at -2% in the quarter, with “almost single-digit growth” expected even considering the festival, real estate was “single digit” and could have been “double-digit growth,” IPO advertising was “50%,” healthcare was “strong double digit,” automobile was flat, and education was single digit; no major CapEx is foreseen in “couple of quarters or maybe four, five quarters ahead,” and cash and bank balance was “around INR 1,120 crores” after paying INR 5 per share as the first interim dividend.
Underlying Business Remained Broadly Stable
Management said the underlying business remained broadly stable despite the year-on-year impact from the shift in festival-linked advertising activity, supported by strong reader relationships, trusted brands, and continued relevance among advertisers.
Positive Outlook for the Next Two Quarters
Management remains positive about the second half of the year and expects the festive season to support advertising activity across key markets. After reviewing the momentum of the last seven to eight days of the festival, management said it remains optimistic about the next two quarters and is endeavoring to achieve high single-digit to early double-digit full-year advertising revenue growth.
Advertising Revenue Benefit from Reader Engagement and Premium Placement
Despite largely flat circulation, management said advertising has continued to show good single-digit quarter-on-quarter growth, excluding the festive-season shift, by improving advertiser impact, increasing market share in certain markets, upgrading advertisers from inside pages to premium pages, and increasing advertising ticket sizes.
Circulation Base Maintained at Approximately 38 Lakh Copies
Circulation was approximately 38 lakh copies, or 37.68 lakh copies more precisely, and was described as almost the same as the previous quarter. Management is continuing efforts to maintain circulation in core markets and protect its base in non-core markets.
Strong Performance in Selected Advertising Verticals
Jewelry performed well despite the festive shift, banking and financial services performed well, healthcare delivered strong double-digit growth, and IPO advertising grew 50% versus last year. Management cautioned that the IPO volume was not large.
Digital Subscription Pricing Experiments Showing Decent Results
The company has tested increasing the digital app subscription price from INR 149 to INR 199, along with other pricing experiments across subscriber cohorts of approximately 100,000 users. Management said the results have been 'pretty decent and good,' although the revenue and retention impact is still too early to determine.
Digital Election Positioning in Uttar Pradesh
For the upcoming U.P. elections, management highlighted sizable monthly active users and daily active users, a large journalist network, and what it described as substantially higher ground coverage than other news organizations. The company is working to increase reader engagement and is hopeful that its U.P. subscriber base will rise during the election period.
Digital Business Continues to Receive Investment
Management said the company remains committed to its digital business, continues to spend and invest in it, and is conducting experiments in subscriptions, advertising, and technology-company tie-ups. The company said the overall results of experiments over the last two years have been in the right, positive direction.
Digital Revenue Model Being Developed Across Three Streams
Management is developing digital revenue through advertising, subscriptions, and technology tie-ups rather than relying on a single source. Advertising on the app began approximately four quarters ago, and the company is testing the model while seeking to avoid negatively affecting consumer experience.
Operating Costs Remained Under Control
Management said other costs were lower compared with last year, personal costs and other costs were under control, and the company had taken cuts across most cost elements. The quarter-to-quarter increase in other expenses was attributed to sales-based events that generate corresponding revenue and profit.
Strong Cash Position and Limited Near-Term CapEx
The company reported approximately INR 1,120 crore in cash and bank balances and said it does not have any large capital expenditure planned because its machines and production equipment are already in place. Management does not foresee major CapEx in the next couple of quarters or the next four to five quarters.
Dividend Already Paid and Further Distribution Under Review
The company paid an interim dividend of INR 5 per share in Q1. The board will decide how to further distribute the cash held by the company to stakeholders and shareholders.
Lease Termination Generated INR 13.39 Crore of Other Income
The Ahmedabad registered-office lease was terminated because the building was going for redevelopment. The company derecognized the right-of-use asset and lease liability and booked a gain of approximately INR 13.39 crore under other income in accordance with Ind AS 116/109.
No Immediate Newspaper Price Increase
Management decided not to increase newspaper cover prices because it believes a higher cover price would further escalate circulation decline. The stated objective is to keep newspapers affordable and maintain circulation.
