Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Profitability TurnaroundThe shift from negative profitability in 2021 to positive net and operating margins indicates a meaningful earnings turnaround. Sustained improvement would strengthen capital generation and provide greater resilience against credit costs and competitive pricing pressure.
Growing Balance-Sheet ScaleExpansion in assets and equity broadens the bank’s capacity to serve retail, MSME, corporate and government-linked customers. Greater scale can support recurring interest and fee income, while a stronger equity base provides additional loss-absorption capacity.
Diversified Banking FranchiseA diversified customer base and mix of lending, payments and fee services reduce dependence on a single segment. Combining branch distribution with digital channels can support durable deposit gathering, cross-selling and broader access to banking demand.
Bears Say
Higher LeverageThe sharp rise in leverage reduces balance-sheet flexibility and increases sensitivity to funding costs, asset-quality deterioration and regulatory capital needs. This could constrain growth or shareholder returns if the bank must retain more earnings to support expansion.
Volatile Cash GenerationRepeated periods of negative operating and free cash flow indicate that internal funding capacity has been inconsistent. Although 2026 was strong, the prior volatility makes liquidity planning and reinvestment less predictable and can increase reliance on external funding.
Core Margin VolatilityLower gross margin suggests pressure in the bank’s underlying spread or operating economics, even as net profitability improved. Persistent margin compression could limit earnings quality and make future results more dependent on balance-sheet growth or non-core income.
