Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Cash GenerationStrong operating and free cash flow gives HP internal funding capacity for maintenance investment, debt reduction, dividends, and selective growth. The recent improvement supports resilience through the cycle, although management still links cash performance to industry conditions.
Low Financial LeverageVery low reported leverage reduces balance-sheet pressure and leaves HP better positioned to manage weaker drilling conditions. It also gives management flexibility to preserve shareholder returns, fund rig investments, and pursue deleveraging without relying heavily on new borrowing.
Technology And International ExpansionExpansion in Vaca Muerta and geothermal drilling broadens HP’s activity base beyond its core North American market. Record well performance, planned rig additions, and technology adoption could support utilization and create more durable growth opportunities over several quarters.
Bears Say
Revenue And Profitability DeteriorationThe decline in revenue and return to negative net margin show that HP’s earnings stability has weakened after the prior upcycle. Although EBITDA remains meaningful, lower operating profitability can restrict reinvestment capacity and make results more sensitive to drilling activity.
Geopolitical Operating DisruptionDisruptions in Iraq, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia can reduce rig utilization and delay revenue recovery in international operations. The reactivation uncertainty also makes capacity planning and quarterly margin delivery less predictable, extending operational risk beyond a single reporting period.
Underlying Earnings VolatilityThe adjusted quarterly loss indicates that reported profitability was materially supported by a one-time gain rather than fully recurring operations. Combined with lumpy performance bonuses and reactivation timing, this makes sustainable earnings power harder to assess over the next several quarters.

Q3 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented multiple strong operational and financial wins — higher revenue (+11% sequential), beat on adjusted EBITDA ($236M), robust free cash flow ($98M), notable NAS margin expansion and rig reactivations, offshore outperformance, and accelerating momentum in Argentina and geothermal. Management also laid out a concrete deleveraging and cost-reduction plan (targeting 1.0x net debt/EBITDA, $40M annual corporate cost savings, and $160M+ asset-sale proceeds). Offsetting these positives are continuing geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East that have delayed some reactivations, lumpy performance bonus timing, and the fact that reported EPS included a material one-time gain (adjusted EPS would be a loss). On balance, the highlights and forward-looking initiatives outweigh the lowlights, though some execution and geopolitical risks remain.View all GB:0J4G earnings summaries0J4G Stock 12 Month Forecast
