Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive, with record revenue, margins, EPS, orders, backlog, broad-based optical and data center growth, improved supply commitments, and a preliminary fiscal 2027 outlook for at least 30% revenue growth and 25% to 27% adjusted operating margin. The principal challenges were supply constraints that limit the pace of revenue conversion, near-term cash investment requirements, a potential Canadian tariff impact of approximately $10 million per quarter, and some variability in DCOM revenue.Company Guidance
Record Quarterly Revenue and Profitability
Q3 revenue reached $1.67 billion, another quarterly record and up 37% year on year. Adjusted operating margin was 22.5%, exceeding guidance by 250 basis points, more than doubling year on year, and representing the highest level ever achieved for the company. Adjusted EPS was a record $2.11, up 215% year on year.
Strong Optical Networks and Data Center Growth
Combined optical networks revenue, including interconnects, grew over 45% year on year. RLS and WAV server systems each grew over 55%, interconnects more than doubled year on year, and direct cloud provider revenue grew over 80%. The in-and-around-the-data-center portion of revenue quadrupled year to date, ahead of the company's committed 3x growth.
Accelerating Orders and Backlog
Q3 book-to-bill was significantly greater than 1, resulting in a substantial quarterly increase in backlog. Backlog increased by $800 million during the quarter to $8.5 billion, and the company expects to exit fiscal 2026 with over $10 billion in backlog. One month into Q4, orders booked were approaching the entirety of Q3 orders.
Durable AI-Driven Market Opportunity
Management described an extraordinary industry demand environment driven by AI-related bandwidth, connectivity, and network traffic growth. Ciena expects its total addressable market to effectively double over the next 3 years, from approximately $25 billion to approximately $50 billion by 2029, while also expecting its share of that market to increase.
WaveLogic 6 Extreme Leadership and Adoption
WaveLogic 6 Extreme remains the only 1.6 terabit high-performance modem on the market after 18 months. Its ramp has already exceeded that of the prior-generation WaveLogic 5e, and customer adoption is increasing across the traditional WAN and AI WAN markets.
Strong RLS Position and Hyper-Rail Progress
Ciena's intelligent line systems remain exceptionally strong, with RLS described as the industry standard in disaggregated line systems and approximately 70% market share. Customer orders for next-generation RLS Hyper-Rail are ramping, with initial customer standardization still on track by the end of 2026 and material revenue expected as the product scales through 2027.
Interconnect Portfolio Momentum
WaveLogic 5 nano pluggable optics continued to ramp into production volume, with Q3 shipments of 800ZR plugs more than twice the prior quarter's volume. Ciena also reported strong market receptivity to Nitro, its linear redriver for active copper cable solutions, and received sample orders from several anchor customers for Vesta, its open co-packaged optical solution.
Hyperscaler Component Design Win
Ciena reported a significant hyperscaler win integrating its WaveLogic 6 coherent technology into the customer's own platform. The solution combines Ciena's DSPs, drivers, TIAs, and coherent expertise into a complete module intended for broad deployment across the customer's global optical network.
Improved Gross Margin Profile
Q3 adjusted gross margin was 46.4%, up 450 basis points year on year and 90 basis points above the top end of guidance. Excluding approximately 70 basis points from tariff refunds, gross margin still reached the top end of guidance due to disciplined cost execution, favorable mix, and pricing discipline. Management stated that the company has reset its margin baseline to its mid-40s goal and expects further expansion over the next few years.
Free Cash Flow and Liquidity
Despite investments in working capital to support slightly higher inventory levels and increased revenue through the quarter, Ciena generated $116 million in free cash flow and ended Q3 with $2.8 billion in cash and equivalents.
Lower Cost of Capital and Share Repurchases
The June convertible debt issuance provided a 5-year zero-coupon instrument with an economic conversion premium of 114% and enabled repayment of the company's 5.5% interest term loan. Ciena also repurchased 356 thousand shares for an aggregate price of $172 million in Q3.
Expanded Capacity and Supply Security
Capital investments increased capacity sufficient to support RLS plug and WAV server revenue growth of over 60% year to date. The company finalized long-term agreements securing certain key components through 2029, including incremental capacity, and is also qualifying additional suppliers and evaluating new technologies to strengthen supply resiliency.
Raised Fiscal 2026 Outlook
Q4 fiscal 2026 revenue guidance is $1.75 billion plus or minus $50 million, raising the full-year revenue midpoint to $6.42 billion, up $120 million from the prior quarter. The company expects Q4 adjusted gross margin of 45% plus or minus 50 basis points and adjusted operating margin of approximately 20% plus or minus 50 basis points. Full-year adjusted operating margin is expected to be between 20% and 21%, exceeding 20% for the first time in company history.
Strong Preliminary Fiscal 2027 Outlook
Management expects fiscal 2027 to be another record year, with revenue growing a minimum of 30% year on year to at least $8.3 billion to $8.4 billion. Fiscal 2027 adjusted gross margin is expected to be at least between 45% and 46%, and adjusted operating margin is expected to be between 25% and 27%.
Pricing and Value Exchange Progress
Customer discussions have progressed toward price increases ranging from high single digits to high teens and low twenties, depending on the product line, with some increases selectively applying to backlog. Discussions also cover payment terms, fill rates, and reciprocal supply commitments rather than pricing alone.
Broad Customer and Geographic Demand
Approximately 50% of Ciena's business is now directly with hyperscalers. The company is also focused on neo-scalers and expects that market to become increasingly important in 2027 and 2028. Demand is broad across RLS, Hyper-Rail, modems, MOFN deployments, submarine networks, and data center connectivity, including activity in India, the Middle East, North America, and other parts of Asia.
Service Provider and Submarine Market Growth
Management expects steady service provider growth over the next few years, supported by infrastructure underinvestment over the prior 5 years, renewed optical infrastructure spending, and MOFN activity. Ciena also cited massive global submarine buildouts and its number one market share in the global submarine market.
Scale-Across and Existing Data Center Visibility
Scale-across connectivity was described as a major and still early-stage demand driver, with initial deployments linking data centers for several hyperscalers in North America. Management also stated that much of the visible demand is tied to existing data centers, GPU refreshes, increased capacity, inference traffic, and network expansion, rather than solely new data center construction.
Software and Embedded Intelligence Value
Although web-scale deployments generally contain fewer off-box software components, customers continue to receive sophisticated on-box software, protection mechanisms, planning and deployment tools, link-engineering tools, and global service capabilities supporting network activation and service-level agreements.
Positive Economics for Hyper-Rail and Coherent Connectivity
Management expects Hyper-Rail's economics to be a step function above the improved RLS margin profile and to be accretive to the company as a whole once it reaches scale in 2027, 2028, and 2029. Ciena also expects coherent connectivity inside data centers to become an important market and believes its planned 3.2-terabit offering will position it to lead that market.
