Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 27, 2026|% Change Since:-0.58%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall, supported by record earnings, record revenue and fee income, solid loan growth, a 4.07% net interest margin, stable core credit metrics, capital ratios above targets, and progress toward closing the Finward acquisition. The company also identified challenges, including elevated expenses, higher classified assets tied to one relationship, rate-related declines in tangible book value and TCE, CRE and Oak Street payoff pressure, slower leasing growth, and increased deposit competition. Management nevertheless expressed confidence in fourth-quarter performance and its ability to close the year strongly.

Company Guidance

For the fourth quarter, First Financial expects low to mid-single digit loan growth on an annualized basis and low single-digit core deposit balance growth; net interest margin is expected to increase to a range of 4.08%-4.12% over the next quarter, assuming a December rate hike, with the long-term impact from this increase in rates expected to be approximately three to four basis points, following an initial 7-8 basis point improvement and deposit-cost catch-up in really probably between a quarter and two quarters; fourth quarter credit costs are expected to approximate third quarter levels and ACL coverage to remain relatively stable as a percentage of loans; fee income is expected to be between $75 million and $78 million, including $18 million-$20 million of foreign exchange income and $21 million-$23 million of leasing business revenue, while non-interest expenses are expected to be between $150 million and $153 million.

  • Record Earnings and RevenueThird quarter adjusted net income was $87.8 million and adjusted earnings per share was $0.84, producing an adjusted return on assets of 1.56% and adjusted return on tangible common equity of 20.2%. Earnings per share increased 11% from the third quarter of 2025 and was the highest in the company's history. Record third quarter revenue was $273.9 million, driven by a strong 4.07% net interest margin and record adjusted fee revenue.
  • Strong Net Interest MarginNet interest margin increased nine basis points during the quarter to 4.07%. Asset yields increased 13 basis points, partially offset by a four basis point increase in the cost of funds. Management expects the net interest margin to increase to 4.08%-4.12% over the next quarter, assuming a December rate hike.
  • Record and Diversified Fee IncomeAdjusted fee income reached a company-record $77.6 million and represented 28% of total revenue. Linked-quarter growth was driven by strong performances from foreign exchange, wealth management, client derivatives, and bank card income, while leasing also had a solid quarter.
  • Solid Loan Growth and Healthy PipelineEnd-of-period loan balances increased $170 million, or 5% on an annualized basis, with C&I, Summit, and Consumer having strong quarters. Loan pipelines remained healthy, and management expects low to mid-single-digit loan growth as it closes out 2026. C&I growth was described as broad-based across product categories and markets, including Chicago, Northeast Ohio, and Southwest Ohio.
  • Deposit Growth and Balance Sheet FlexibilityAverage deposit balances increased $52 million, or 1.2% on an annualized basis, driven by interest-bearing demand accounts, retail CDs, and money market accounts. Excluding brokered CDs, average deposits increased $144 million from the second quarter. Management cited a loan-to-deposit ratio of approximately 78%, compared with a historical comfort range of 83%-85%, providing flexibility to manage future loan and deposit growth.
  • Stable Core Credit MetricsAsset quality trends were stable during the quarter. Net charge-offs were 21 basis points on an annualized basis, non-performing assets were 45 basis points of assets, and both measures were comparable to second-quarter levels. ACL coverage remained unchanged at 1.38% of total loans, while management said watch and worse buckets remained steady and it did not see anything systemic coming down the pike.
  • Capital Ratios Above TargetsAll regulatory capital ratios increased from the second quarter and remained in excess of regulatory minimums and internal targets. The tangible common equity ratio was 7.81%, and management stated that the ratio would have been 9.65% absent the impact from accumulated other comprehensive income.
  • Shareholder ReturnsThe company returned 34% of third-quarter earnings to shareholders through the common dividend and maintained its commitment to providing an attractive return to shareholders while evaluating capital actions that support that commitment.
  • Positive Finward Acquisition ProgressThe company received regulatory approval for its acquisition of Finward and expects to close on January 1st, 2027, subject to state regulatory and Finward shareholder approvals.
  • Expected Fourth-Quarter Fee RevenueManagement expects fourth-quarter fee income of $75 million-$78 million, including $18 million-$20 million of foreign exchange income and $21 million-$23 million of leasing business revenue.
  • Expected Expense ModerationManagement expects fourth-quarter non-interest expenses of $150 million-$153 million. The expected moderation reflects the absence of a third-quarter year-to-date incentive true-up, lower credit and collection costs, typically lower healthcare costs after the third-quarter bump, and moderation in other line items.
  • Efficiency Ratio Improvement PotentialManagement said the leasing business impacts the efficiency ratio by approximately 200 basis points. The company has been running around a 57% efficiency ratio and expects it to decline by 50-100 basis points, to around 56%, when announced deals and related actions are fully reflected.
  • Leadership Continuity and Strategic FocusRecently announced senior leadership changes were described as supporting continuity, financial performance, and the company's engagement-centric culture. Management said it is focused in the near term on closing and integrating Finward while remaining open to future bank or non-bank opportunities that make strategic sense.
