Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Production And Portfolio StrengthSustained high production (198.8m boe) reflects robust operated assets and portfolio reliability (e.g., Sangomar). Durable production capacity underpins long-term cash generation, contract fulfilment and ability to navigate commodity cycles, supporting stable free-cash potential in upcycles.
Contracted Volumes & Project De‑riskingHigh contract coverage (~75% of 2026–28 volumes) gives predictable revenue and mitigates spot volatility. Partner sell‑downs on Louisiana LNG materially lower Woodside's capital burden, improving project funding flexibility and reducing execution funding risk over the multi‑year build.
Balance Sheet & LiquidityModerate leverage within the 10–20% target and sizable liquidity ($9.3bn) provide a durable buffer to support large project spend, dividend policy and credit metrics. This capital structure enhances resilience through commodity cycles and enables partner de‑risking without urgent refinancing.
Bears Say
Negative Free Cash Flow & Cash VolatilityThe swing to negative free cash flow in 2025 signals that operating cash generation is being outpaced by investment and/or weaker conversion. Over the medium term this increases reliance on liquidity and partner funding, and can constrain discretionary returns or force capital‑allocation tradeoffs.
Capital Intensity & Project CapExMaterial near‑term capex across Scarborough, Louisiana LNG and Trion keeps cash demands elevated for several years. Even with sell‑downs, a ~$9.9bn project share plus other investments raises execution and financing risk, pressuring FCF and requiring strict capital prioritisation.
Tax (PRRT) UncertaintyLegislative and modelling uncertainty around PRRT creates durable earnings volatility risk as Scarborough and other projects ramp. Higher or unpredictable tax cashflows can materially reduce NPAT and shareholder distributions, complicating long‑term investment and dividend planning.
