Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive overall. WinTrust reported record net income for the seventh consecutive quarter, solid 8% annualized loan and deposit growth, stable margins, improving efficiency, strong asset quality, market-share gains, and positive fourth-quarter growth expectations. The main challenges were lower noninterest income, a soft mortgage market, a softened premium finance market, competitive loan pricing, deposit-mix pressure, and continued economic and interest-rate uncertainty, but management characterized these conditions as manageable and remained confident in the company's competitive position and momentum into 2027.Company Guidance
Seventh Consecutive Record Net Income
Third-quarter net income was $239 million, up from $234 million in the prior quarter, marking WinTrust's seventh consecutive quarter of record net income.
Strong Loan and Deposit Growth
Loans and deposits each grew at an annualized rate of 8% during the quarter. Total deposits increased by approximately $1.3 billion and funded roughly $1.1 billion of third-quarter loan growth.
Net Interest Income Increased
Net interest income improved by $24.2 million from the second quarter to $621.6 million, primarily due to a $2.1 billion increase in average earning assets.
Stable Net Interest Margin
Third-quarter net interest margin was 3.51%, down 1 basis point from the prior quarter due to one additional day in the quarter. Net interest margin has remained within the 3.50% to 3.59% range for the last 11 quarters.
Deposit Costs Controlled Despite Growth
Interest-bearing deposit costs declined by 1 basis point during the quarter, matching the 1 basis point decline in loan yields. Management said deposit growth was somewhat more commercial than retail and that the company continued winning business at promotional pricing levels of 4% or the low 4s.
Illinois Deposit Market Share Gains
Core Illinois deposits grew 9.2% year over year, more than double Illinois's 4.4% growth rate and above the U.S. banking industry average of 5.2%. Management also said WinTrust outperformed both Illinois and the U.S. banking industry on deposit growth.
Broad-Based Loan Growth
Third-quarter loan growth included $690 million of core commercial real estate growth, $226 million of WinTrust Life loan growth, and $153 million of residential mortgage loan growth. Every lending segment recorded positive growth, while total loans increased $4.7 billion, or 9%, year over year.
Stable Credit Environment
The provision for credit losses remained in the $20 million to $30 million range for the seventh consecutive quarter as the overall credit environment and asset quality remained stable.
Low Nonperforming Loan Levels
Nonperforming loans declined from $179.3 million, or 0.32% of total loans, to $176.9 million, or 0.31%. Quarterly charge-offs were 15 basis points and were described as consistent with a stable and benign credit environment.
Commercial Real Estate Credit Performance
Commercial real estate nonperforming loans declined from 12 basis points to 9 basis points. Charge-offs of 2 basis points in the second quarter shifted to 5 basis points of recoveries in the third quarter.
Operating Leverage and Stable Efficiency
Management said the efficiency ratio improved and that the company continued to generate operating leverage as expenses remained appropriate relative to revenue growth. Net overhead and efficiency ratios remained relatively stable through the first nine months of 2026.
Branch Expansion Showing Early Progress
WinTrust opened four new branches during the quarter, with two additional branches opening in October. Management said the branches were off to a good start in deposit gathering and adding new WinTrust households.
Guardianship Services Acquisition Closed
The company closed the previously announced acquisition of a guardianship services business on September 1. The transaction added $1.2 billion of assets under management, was placed on WinTrust's existing systems, and is expected to strengthen its wealth management position, particularly in the Chicago market. Management said guardianship services generally generate fees of about 1% of assets under management.
Positive Lending Pipelines
Management described lending pipelines as good, with continued market-share gains in Chicago, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Commercial real estate was showing good momentum, and commercial and industrial lending had produced several recent wins that continued to appear in the pipeline.
Resilient Midwest Customers and Economy
Management said the Midwest economy had remained resilient despite tariffs, increased rates, transportation costs, and other shocks. Customers were described as believing they could manage through these conditions, and client conversations reflected cautious optimism about the business environment.
Fourth-Quarter Growth Outlook
For the fourth quarter, management expects loan and deposit growth in the mid to high single digits, supported by positive client feedback, solid pipelines, and WinTrust's market position.
Margin Outlook Remains Stable
Management expects net interest margin to remain stable at plus or minus 3.5%. Because the loan book is largely variable priced, management said higher SOFR or other loan-index rates, or moderation in deposit-cost increases, could support a slightly higher margin.
Potential Margin Benefit from Repricing
Approximately 80% of loans reprice or mature within a year. Management said that, in a rising-rate environment, deposit rates lagging loan repricing could create a slight bias toward a higher margin, while premium finance books are expected to reprice over time.
High-Rate Debt Redemption
The company has already redeemed or intends to redeem seven trust preferred securities totaling approximately $108 million during the fourth quarter. The redemptions will retire higher-priced floating-rate debentures with an average spread of approximately 309 basis points over three-month SOFR.
Strong Capital Position
Management said the capital position remained strong and increased during the quarter. Once capital exceeds 10.5%, the company expects to look more materially at additional capital deployment options in the fourth quarter and into 2027.
Ongoing Investment in Customer and Technology Capabilities
WinTrust continues to pursue its priorities of delivering a differentiated customer experience, disciplined growth, and investing in its future. Management said treasury management, wealth services, technology, and the relationship banking model position the company to compete effectively without requiring additional scale.
Premium Finance Business Continues Taking Share
Although the premium finance market has softened, management expects positive growth in deal sizes next year and believes the business can continue growing in line with the mid to high single digits. Technology investments were cited as helping WinTrust continue to take market share.
Mortgage Franchise and Servicing Base
Management expects WinTrust's mortgage share to be higher as some refinance shops and independent providers have not survived the cycle. Approximately half of mortgage-related revenue is tied to servicing, and residential mortgage balances have generally been growing by $100 million to $200 million per quarter.
Disciplined M&A Pipeline
Management continues to have conversations primarily with smaller banks that may be exploring exit options. The company said larger-scale discussions have been few and far between.
