Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Cash GenerationSCI generates durable cash flow: TTM OCF near $1.04B and healthy free cash flow, with management raising the OCF midpoint. Strong recurring cash conversion supports dividends, buybacks, targeted M&A and maintenance capex, providing financial flexibility over the next several quarters.
Preneed Sales MomentumRising preneed production—notably cemetery sales—builds structural forward revenue and margins: higher pre-need volumes increase future service capture and smooth demand volatility. Strong preneed pipelines reduce revenue cyclicality and support long-term cash visibility and margin stability.
Capital Returns DisciplineAn expanded repurchase authorization alongside regular dividends shows disciplined capital allocation enabled by strong cash flow. Thoughtful buybacks and a 6% dividend increase demonstrate commitment to shareholder returns while retaining capacity for maintenance capex and selective M&A.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageLeverage is materially elevated, with net leverage near 3.8x. High indebtedness amplifies interest and refinancing risk, limits flexibility for large inorganic investments, and makes the company more vulnerable to cash-flow shocks or rising rates, constraining long-term strategic optionality.
Selling Compensation Margin PressureA structural mix shift to insurance-funded preneed and more fixed-pay sales compensation raises current GAAP selling-cost recognition. That dynamic compresses near-term margins and could persist if product mix remains skewed, pressuring operating profitability until recognition patterns stabilize.
Governance ScrutinyHeightened shareholder scrutiny and a failed director vote increase the risk of governance-driven changes or activist involvement. Board turnover or strategic re-prioritization can distract management, potentially delaying integration of initiatives and affecting long-term execution and stakeholder relations.

Company Description
Service Corporation International
Service Corporation International (SCI) is a leading provider of comprehensive end-of-life products and services across the United States and Canada. The company structures its extensive operations into two primary divisions: Funeral Services and Cemetery Operations. SCI's physical footprint encompasses a vast network of funeral homes, cemeteries, and crematories, including numerous integrated locations that offer both funeral and cemetery services. Their professional offerings span the entire funeral and cremation process, from the logistical aspects of facility and vehicle use to the compassionate arrangement and direction of services. This includes essential tasks such as removal, preparation, embalming, and cremation, alongside memorialization options, travel protection plans, and catering. Clients can also procure a wide array of funeral merchandise. This includes burial caskets and associated accessories, various urns and other cremation receptacles, outer burial containers, floral arrangements, digital and video tributes, stationery, and other items for memorialization. Within its cemetery division, SCI facilitates the acquisition of interment rights for diverse preferences, such as traditional developed lots, lawn crypts, mausoleum spaces, and niches for cremated remains. They also provide cemetery-specific merchandise and services like memorial markers, bases, outer burial containers, floral placements, graveside services, and merchandise installation, often available through pre-need arrangements. SCI markets its services and products under several well-recognized brands, including Dignity Memorial, Neptune Society, and National Cremation Society. As of the end of 2021, the company boasted an impressive reach with 1,471 funeral service locations and 488 cemeteries – 299 of which were combined funeral/cemetery sites. This significant network extends across 44 U.S. states, eight Canadian provinces, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. Established in 1962, Service Corporation International maintains its headquarters in Houston, Texas.

SVC Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call conveyed multiple clear operational and financial positives: solid preneed sales momentum (especially Cemetery), materially stronger operating cash flow, a raised cash flow guidance midpoint, robust free cash flow growth, active capital returns, disciplined liquidity and M&A execution, and early benefits from sales strategy and digital/AI initiatives. Offsetting these positives were near-term margin pressures from accounting recognition of selling compensation tied to the shift in product and pay mix, lower Funeral case volumes earlier in the year, preneed recognition timing/backlog effects that depress near-term recognition rates, and some below-the-line/one-time tax and interest dynamics. Management indicated these headwinds are largely transitional and expects margin expansion and double-digit EPS growth in H2 2026, leading to a net positive outlook.View all DE:SVC earnings summariesSVC Revenue Breakdown
