Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Cemetery Preneed GrowthStrong cemetery preneed production supports future service revenue and improves visibility beyond at-need demand. The growth, alongside higher cemetery revenue and gross profit, indicates continued customer adoption and a durable pipeline.
Strong Cash GenerationRobust operating cash flow and a higher full-year outlook demonstrate strong earnings quality and funding capacity. This supports maintenance investment, acquisitions, debt service and shareholder returns while preserving operating flexibility.
Resilient ProfitabilitySCI retains substantial operating profitability despite industry normalization and recent margin pressure. The combination of positive revenue momentum and solid margins provides a durable base for absorbing cost changes and pursuing growth initiatives.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageHigh leverage amplifies returns but reduces financial flexibility if volumes or margins weaken. It can constrain acquisitions, capital returns and investment capacity, while increasing refinancing sensitivity and the importance of sustained cash generation.
Funeral Volume And Margin PressureSoft funeral volumes directly challenge a key service revenue stream, while compensation recognition changes weigh on reported margins. Even if some effects stabilize, demographic normalization and product-mix shifts may limit near-term operating leverage.
Tax And Refinancing HeadwindsTemporary tax credits currently support cash flow but are not a recurring earnings advantage, creating a lower normalized FCF base. The approaching notes maturity also requires refinancing or repayment planning amid elevated leverage.

Company Description
Service Corporation International
Service Corporation International (SCI) is a leading provider of comprehensive end-of-life products and services across the United States and Canada. The company structures its extensive operations into two primary divisions: Funeral Services and Cemetery Operations. SCI's physical footprint encompasses a vast network of funeral homes, cemeteries, and crematories, including numerous integrated locations that offer both funeral and cemetery services. Their professional offerings span the entire funeral and cremation process, from the logistical aspects of facility and vehicle use to the compassionate arrangement and direction of services. This includes essential tasks such as removal, preparation, embalming, and cremation, alongside memorialization options, travel protection plans, and catering. Clients can also procure a wide array of funeral merchandise. This includes burial caskets and associated accessories, various urns and other cremation receptacles, outer burial containers, floral arrangements, digital and video tributes, stationery, and other items for memorialization. Within its cemetery division, SCI facilitates the acquisition of interment rights for diverse preferences, such as traditional developed lots, lawn crypts, mausoleum spaces, and niches for cremated remains. They also provide cemetery-specific merchandise and services like memorial markers, bases, outer burial containers, floral placements, graveside services, and merchandise installation, often available through pre-need arrangements. SCI markets its services and products under several well-recognized brands, including Dignity Memorial, Neptune Society, and National Cremation Society. As of the end of 2021, the company boasted an impressive reach with 1,471 funeral service locations and 488 cemeteries – 299 of which were combined funeral/cemetery sites. This significant network extends across 44 U.S. states, eight Canadian provinces, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. Established in 1962, Service Corporation International maintains its headquarters in Houston, Texas.

SCI Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call conveyed multiple clear operational and financial positives: solid preneed sales momentum (especially Cemetery), materially stronger operating cash flow, a raised cash flow guidance midpoint, robust free cash flow growth, active capital returns, disciplined liquidity and M&A execution, and early benefits from sales strategy and digital/AI initiatives. Offsetting these positives were near-term margin pressures from accounting recognition of selling compensation tied to the shift in product and pay mix, lower Funeral case volumes earlier in the year, preneed recognition timing/backlog effects that depress near-term recognition rates, and some below-the-line/one-time tax and interest dynamics. Management indicated these headwinds are largely transitional and expects margin expansion and double-digit EPS growth in H2 2026, leading to a net positive outlook.View all SCI earnings summariesSCI Revenue Breakdown
