Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
North American Packaging GainsRecord volumes, customer growth and market-share gains indicate improving commercial traction in North American packaging. Higher Somerset PM2 utilization can support better fixed-cost absorption and establish a stronger platform for recurring volume and pricing improvements over the next several quarters.
Dissolving Pulp MomentumImproving DWP pricing alongside healthy demand, low inventories and high VSF operating rates supports a favorable underlying market position. This can improve realized pricing and segment earnings as current price increases flow through with timing benefits in Q4 and Q1.
Cost Reduction ExecutionDelivering EUR 120 million of savings demonstrates tangible management execution and provides an internal lever to offset inflation and protect margins. Sustained fixed- and variable-cost actions could improve operating resilience even if paper pricing and input costs remain volatile.
Bears Say
Severe Margin DeteriorationThe sharp gross-margin compression and deep net loss show that revenue growth is not currently translating into durable earnings power. Persistently weak margin conversion reduces funds available for reinvestment, debt reduction and shareholder returns until pricing or cost conditions improve.
Elevated Leverage And Weak FlexibilityHigher leverage combined with negative returns on equity reduces financial flexibility and makes recovery dependent on a substantial earnings improvement. The stated EBITDA threshold for meaningful deleveraging indicates that balance-sheet repair may take multiple periods rather than occurring quickly.
Persistent Cost HeadwindsThe exceptional sulphur increase creates a large direct cost burden, while logistics inflation adds pressure across operations. These pressures can continue to absorb pricing and cost-saving benefits, limiting margin recovery and increasing earnings volatility over the next several quarters.

SPIA Earnings Call
Q3 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call reflected a balanced but cautious tone: meaningful operational positives (record North American volumes, DWP price momentum, EUR 120m cost savings, disciplined CapEx and strong liquidity) are offset by substantial and persistent cost headwinds (sulphur spike, logistics/diesel inflation, currency strength) and compressed year‑on‑year selling prices. Management expects a materially stronger Q4 and is focused on deleveraging, but achieving normalized EBITDA levels (~$500m target) remains a multi-period challenge.View all DE:SPIA earnings summariesTechnical Analysis
