Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2027

Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call had a mixed tone. Management highlighted measurable progress in marketing efficiency, store-level execution, merchandising, category performance and refinancing, with recent monthly sales trends improving to flat. However, second-quarter sales, margins, operating income and earnings declined materially, traffic remained down mid-single digits, oil costs increased and fiscal 2027 guidance calls for comparable sales to be flat to slightly down with higher interest expense and SG&A. The positive operating initiatives and recent traction were balanced by ongoing financial and macroeconomic pressures.
Company Guidance
For the full year of fiscal 2027, Monro now expects to deliver year-over-year comparable store sales that are flat to slightly down in fiscal 2027, given continued macro pressures on the consumer; gross margin for the full year of fiscal 2027 will largely depend on where comparable store sales land, but we would expect to be consistent to down slightly versus fiscal 2026; the company expects higher selling, general and administrative expenses as it invests in additional marketing to support its top line; net interest expense will be between $28 million to $32 million; and capital expenditures are expected to be $25 million to $35 million.
Improved Marketing Efficiency and Customer Engagement
Targeted promotional investments in brakes and oil, combined with refined digital marketing and CRM usage, produced a year-over-year reduction in cost per lead. Store traffic improved in September relative to July and August, customer call volume increased in certain regions, and average repair orders for oil-change appointments booked through the call center and online system increased. Including service attachments, the average ticket was roughly 2 to 3x the dollar value of an oil change alone.
District Manager Toolkit Delivering Early Store-Level Results
The district manager toolkit had been rolled out to approximately 340 stores and was expanded to a majority of store locations during the quarter. Among 146 stores receiving the toolkit and coaching support, sales grew at a mid-single-digit rate and bottom-line performance improved by more than 20% year-over-year in the second quarter.
Dedicated Operating Efficiency Team Established
Monro established a dedicated operating efficiency team to scale the district manager toolkit more rapidly. Three experienced field leaders moved into coaching and training roles and are working directly with store teams in areas with the greatest improvement opportunities.
Positive Battery and Maintenance Services Performance
Comparable store sales grew year-over-year in both batteries and maintenance services during the second quarter. Battery comparable sales increased 8% for the second consecutive quarter, supported by improved in-store stocking programs and front-of-shop presentation.
ConfiDrive Supported Repair Order Growth
The ConfiDrive courtesy inspection process helped drive average repair order growth and contributed to comparable store sales gains in batteries and maintenance services by helping store teams educate customers about vehicle needs.
Brake Unit Growth Despite Lower Category Sales
Although brake category comparable sales declined, targeted promotional activity drove unit growth in the high-margin brake service category. Management described the unit performance as an important indicator of underlying demand.
Merchandising and Assortment Improvements Underway
After completing an update to its tire assortment, Monro shifted focus to improving parts availability, pricing and brake assortment quality. The company is continuing to work with core suppliers while identifying new vendors to support sales and margins.
Tire Unit Volume Held Flat
Tire category sales declined 4% in the quarter, but tire unit volume remained flat. Management said Monro held its own in the tire industry, including in both first-tier and fourth-tier products, and noted some improvement in tire mix during September and October.
Supply Remained Largely Uninterrupted
Despite extended geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Monro said its oil supply had been largely uninterrupted and that it continued to receive the supply necessary to meet customer needs.
Recent Sales Trend Improved
Comparable store sales were down 1% in July, down 3% in August and flat in September. Preliminary October comparable store sales were also flat, which management characterized as evidence of resiliency in a challenging environment.
Refinancing Completed With Four-Year Facilities
Monro entered into a new four-year credit agreement with Ares Capital Corporation providing $375 million of senior secured credit facilities, consisting of a $250 million term loan and a $125 million revolving facility, both maturing on October 23, 2030.
Real Estate Monetization Progress
During the second quarter, Monro exited 9 leases and sold 3 owned locations, generating $3 million of proceeds. Fiscal year-to-date, the company had exited 15 leases and sold 7 locations for cumulative proceeds of $6 million, with 25 stores remaining that could potentially be monetized.
Operational Improvement Costs Declined
Costs for consultants related to the operational improvement plan were $7.1 million lower year-over-year, while transition costs related to back-office optimization were $0.4 million lower.
Broad National Operating Footprint
Monro operates more than 1,100 stores in 32 states and employs more than 6,200 teammates across its shops and store support center.
