Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly constructive, with record revenue, net interest income, pre-tax pre-provision income, and diluted EPS; robust deposit and loan growth; improved efficiency; resilient credit performance; raised net interest income guidance; lower charge-off guidance; and substantial capital flexibility. The main challenges were modest increases in nonperforming and criticized assets, higher credit-loss provisions, lower wealth management fees, modest Mainland China payments volumes, upcoming CD repricing, and acknowledged potential pressure from sustained higher rates. The positive developments significantly outweighed the challenges.
Management expects full-year 2026 loan growth of 6% to 8%, full-year NII growth of 9% to 10% assuming that short term rates remain at current levels through the end of the year, “So flat rates through December,” full-year fee income growth of >10%, and full-year charge offs of 15 to 20 basis points; year-to-date growth in operating non-interest expense is 8% “in line with our guidance,” and management remains comfortable with its overall full-year expense guidance. Management also said the margin “holds broadly consistent” in Q4, but “could expand,” and that a 25-basis-point hike is worth $2.5 million per month “with a bit of a lag,” usually about 45 days.
- Record Quarterly Financial PerformanceEast West reported record revenue, record net interest income, record pre-tax pre-provision income, and record diluted earnings per share in the third quarter.
- Strong Deposit Growth and Lower Deposit CostsNet deposits grew by over $1.4 billion, primarily from money market deposit inflows. Average deposit cost declined by 2 basis points quarter over quarter despite balances reaching record levels.
- Broad-Based Deposit MomentumAverage non-interest-bearing deposits increased 16% year over year. Non-interest-bearing demand deposits represented more than 20% of total deposits at quarter end, and the bank's focus on small-business checking accounts continued to generate growth.
- Record Loan Balances and Solid Loan GrowthLoans reached a record level and grew 7% year over year, consistent with the company's 6% to 8% full-year 2026 guidance.
- Residential Mortgage and Multifamily Lending StrengthResidential mortgage was the standout loan category, with nearly $400 million of net growth. Multifamily lending also had a strong quarter, reflecting continued broad-based housing demand in the bank's core markets.
- Net Interest Income and Margin ExpansionNet interest income increased 9.5% year over year for the first nine months of 2026. Net interest margin expanded by 6 basis points quarter over quarter as positive asset repricing and flat liability costs drove record net interest income.
- Raised Net Interest Income GuidanceThe company raised its full-year net interest income growth outlook to 9% to 10%, assuming short-term rates remain at current levels through year-end.
- Growing Fee IncomeFee income increased 11% year over year for the first nine months of 2026, supported by wealth management, deposit-related fees, and foreign exchange income. Management continues to expect full-year fee income growth of more than 10%.
- Industry-Leading Expense and Efficiency MetricsTotal operating non-interest expense declined during the quarter, primarily due to lower other operating costs and lower compensation and employee benefits expense. The third-quarter efficiency ratio improved to 34.4%, while operating non-interest expense as a percentage of average assets declined 8 basis points to 1.21%. Year-to-date operating non-interest expense growth was 8%, in line with guidance.
- Resilient Credit PerformanceNet charge-offs declined to 15 basis points, or $22 million, in the third quarter from 19 basis points, or $27 million, in the second quarter. Year-to-date annualized net charge-offs were 14 basis points.
- Lowered Net Charge-Off GuidanceManagement narrowed its full-year net charge-off guidance to 15 to 20 basis points, reflecting lower-than-expected year-to-date net charge-offs and current visibility.
- Strong Capital PositionThe common equity Tier 1 ratio was 15.4% and the tangible common equity ratio was 10% at quarter end. Management said all regulatory ratios remained well in excess of requirements for well-capitalized institutions and supported current and future balance-sheet growth.
- Capital Return and Strategic FlexibilityEast West ended the quarter with $117 million of remaining repurchase authorization and declared a fourth-quarter 2026 dividend of $0.80 per share. Management said the capital position supports organic growth, a competitive dividend, disciplined inorganic opportunities, and opportunistic share repurchases.
- Effective Relationship-Banking Deposit StrategyManagement said its branch and commercial relationship-manager outreach strategy continued to grow DDA balances. More than $1 out of every $4 of incremental net deposits on average had come through incremental DDA over roughly the last year and a half.
- Improved CD Pricing EconomicsThe Lunar New Year CD program offered 9- and 12-month terms in addition to 6-month terms, and the net cost of the program contributed to a 3-basis-point quarter-over-quarter reduction in total time-deposit cost.
- Cross-Border and Asia Payments ProgressThe Asia payments program was active across Hong Kong-based activity, with increases in transaction counts, individual wire counts, and dollar volumes. Foreign exchange activity was supported by customer transactions, hedging activity, and spot transactions.
- Core Commercial Lending GrowthAlthough certain non-depository financial institution categories declined, the core C&I business increased by more than $200 million. Management described the growth as a broad-based cross-section of commercial lending activity and expected additional core bilateral C&I business in the fourth quarter.
- Expansion of Fee-Income CapabilitiesManagement said fee-income capabilities remain in the early innings and that the bank is expanding payment services, investment solutions, foreign exchange services, and other offerings. East West formally launched its registered investment advisory entity during the third quarter and is building the team organically.
- Technology and AI Investment InitiativesComputer and software-related expenses increased 21% year over year as part of the company's plan. Internal AI pilots have focused on improving efficiency and evaluation speed, with management seeking cost-containment opportunities while continuing to evaluate potential revenue applications.
- Prudent Cross-Border and Balance-Sheet ManagementManagement said cross-border activity has remained resilient despite geopolitical and tariff-related issues, and that the bank continues to focus on organic growth, better products, stronger capabilities, a prudent balance sheet, and ample capital. Management also stated that the investment portfolio is positioned for potential rules applicable to banks above $100 billion in assets.
- Positive Tariff-Refund Deposit ImpactMore than $1 billion of tariff-refund deposits had flowed through the bank. Management characterized the impact on third-quarter deposit growth as a small positive, with less than $200 million remaining on the balance sheet in the same-customer, same-account category and a similar amount migrating to money market or other savings vehicles.
