Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive, supported by strong net income, higher net interest income and margin, controlled expenses, benign credit metrics, substantial excess capital, deposit growth, and continued commercial pipeline strength. The main challenges were declining mortgage revenue, uncertainty around deposit costs and future rates, moderation in borrower activity in some markets, and a modest increase in commercial nonperforming assets. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
Management expects noninterest-bearing deposit growth of 6% year-over-year, with “some number in the mid-single-digits range” year in and year out across a pretty long horizon; fourth quarter fixed loan repricing includes $700 million rolling off and next year $2.2 million, those loans rolling off at pretty much a 6% flat rate, with reinvestment yields around 100 basis points higher, while deposit beta is expected to be a mid- to low-20s type of a beta. Loan growth was 3% linked quarter annualized, or about 4% excluding the other consumer decline, with mid-single-digits growth the right expectation over a long period of time and 4% consistent with expectations when environments are a little bit more competitive and a little bit more irrational at times; pipelines were as strong as they were a quarter ago. The company expects to record a nonrecurring pretax gain of approximately $27 million in the fourth quarter, expects probably another 1 rate hike in December and something early next year, and is looking at means to reduce its slightly asset sensitive position, including a cash flow hedge and its securities portfolio. Buybacks are limited in the near term, with $96 million of repurchase authority remaining and a $100 million authorization.
- Leadership PromotionsMatthew Adams was promoted to CEO of the Oklahoma region after 19 years with the company, and Brandy Bryant was promoted to the newly created position of head of consumer and small business lending after more than 28 years with the company.
- Strong Third-Quarter ProfitabilityCentral Bank reported third-quarter net income of $116.2 million, or $0.48 per share, producing a return on assets of 2.27%.
- Net Interest Income and Margin ExpansionNet interest income was $218.9 million, up $20 million from the prior-year quarter. FTE net interest margin was 4.51%, up 12 basis points year over year.
- Lower Deposit CostsThe cost of deposits declined 8 basis points from the same quarter last year, reflecting rate cuts implemented late last year.
- Core Fee Income GrowthCore fee income increased 4% year over year, or 8% excluding mortgage.
- Mortgage Originations Remain ProfitableAlthough mortgage revenues declined during the quarter, mortgage originations remained profitable on a direct-cost basis.
- Expense Control and Pension Plan GainThe FTE efficiency ratio was 45.4%, and management said overall expenses remained well controlled. The company expects to record a nonrecurring pretax gain of approximately $27 million in the fourth quarter from terminating its pension plan.
- Benign Credit PerformanceNet charge-offs were 12 basis points in the quarter, which management characterized as benign.
- Strong Capital PositionCapital levels remained well above target, with $2 billion of excess capital, or $8.28 per share.
- Share Repurchase CapacityThe company repurchased a minimal amount of shares during the quarter and had $96 million of repurchase authority remaining. Management said it sees value in the shares at current levels and will remain opportunistic with repurchases.
- Payments Volume Growth and Continued InvestmentPayment volumes were up nicely year over year. Debit card activity was identified as the main driver of consumer payment volume, while the company remains active in growing its commercial payments business within its existing customer base and continues to make investments there.
- Noninterest-Bearing Deposit GrowthNoninterest-bearing deposits increased 6% year over year, consistent with the company's long-term trend. Management expects growth in the mid-single-digits range over a long horizon and said the consumer deposit base represents more than 50% of the total base.
- Loan Repricing OpportunityApproximately $700 million of fixed-rate loans are scheduled to roll off in the fourth quarter and $2.2 million in the following year, with those loans rolling off at approximately a 6% flat rate. Management said reinvestment into current yields is improving yields by around 100 basis points.
- Favorable Loan Mix ShiftDeclines in the higher-yielding indirect consumer lending portfolio are being replaced by residential first mortgages and home equity lines of credit, with management reporting nice HELOC growth during the quarter.
- Potential for Further Margin and NII GrowthManagement said commercial lending provides an opportunity to expand margin, the securities portfolio has significant repricing opportunity, and internal models indicate additional opportunity for net interest margin and net interest income to grind higher under a static curve and static balance sheet.
- Loan Growth and Commercial PipelineLoans grew at a 3% linked-quarter annualized rate, or approximately 4% excluding the decline in other consumer lending. Management said mid-single-digit loan growth is the normal long-term expectation and that gross and net commercial loan pipelines remained as strong as the prior quarter.
- Diversified Market ActivityAlthough borrower activity and appetite moderated in certain markets because of the rate environment and outlook, management said other markets were showing strong activity. The net commercial pipeline remained at levels seen over the last several quarters.
- Interest-Rate Risk ManagementThe company remains slightly asset sensitive and believes a higher-for-longer rate environment benefits its business model. It placed a cash flow hedge at the end of the quarter designed to moderate asset sensitivity and is also evaluating the securities portfolio to reduce exposure to potential rate volatility.
- Shareholder Value FrameworkManagement evaluates growth using net income less a capital charge for the capital required to generate that income, which it calls shareholder value added. Management said the components of this measure should grind higher based on its strategy.
- Public Deposit Franchise and SeasonalityPublic deposits typically trough in September because of tax and property-tax payment timing in Missouri, rise on a spot basis in the fourth quarter, and generally produce a flattish average balance from the third to fourth quarter. The first quarter is typically the highest quarter on an average-balance basis.
- Stable Credit OutlookManagement said the increase in commercial nonperforming assets was situational and specific to certain commercial situations, with no thematic shift or concerning asset-class trend observed. Management remains convicted in the positioning of the portfolio and does not expect anything to shift or change dramatically in the near term.
- Stable Allowance Coverage ApproachThe company is targeting a stable allowance coverage ratio relative to the loan portfolio and expects loan growth to drive a small increase in the absolute allowance balance.
