Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive. Management reported strong core profitability, balanced loan and deposit growth, net interest margin expansion, disciplined expenses, successful acquisition integration and multiple regional growth opportunities. The principal challenges were slower-than-hoped credit improvement, higher charge-offs from a previously identified relationship, below-expectation fee revenue and competitive pressure on deposit pricing. Management nevertheless expressed confidence in continued improvement in profitability, credit metrics and capital generation.
Management expects Q4 loan growth of “mid to upper single-digit growth,” margin expansion in Q4, and, “as long as rates are measured,” “low-to-mid single-digit margin expansion quarterly, depending on that lag, is probably achievable and reasonable,” first in Q4 and then depending on future moves; loan accretion is expected to average about $500,000 for the next few quarters, Q4 core non-interest expense is expected to be about $57 million as the base case, followed by a low single-digit organic growth rate going forward over the next year, and non-interest revenue and bottom-line earnings remain on pace to improve 20% year-over-year, with that trend expected to continue. Management expects to reduce NPAs in Q4, with reductions “upwards of $15 million in the fourth quarter,” continuing throughout the first half of next year, and targets an NPL percentage of loans of 50 basis points or less; it also has a glide path to a 1.25% ROAA goal in Q4, while expecting continued improvement in core profitability into 2027.
- Strong Loan and Deposit GrowthLoans held for investment increased $21.4 million, or 7.2% annualized, led by the Houston and Southwest Louisiana markets. Deposits increased $141.2 million, or 7.7% annualized, including a $119.1 million increase in interest-bearing deposits and a $22.1 million increase in non-interest-bearing deposits.
- Improved Core ProfitabilityThird-quarter non-GAAP core net income was $26 million, or $0.79 per share. Core ROAA was 1.17%, core pre-tax, pre-provision earnings were $36.3 million and exceeded expectations, and the core efficiency ratio was 61.1%.
- Net Interest Margin ExpansionGAAP net interest margin increased 13 basis points linked quarter to 3.86%, while core net interest margin increased 12 basis points from 3.68% to 3.80%. The improvement was driven by higher loan yields, slightly lower funding costs from reduced brokered deposits and FHLB balances, and the full-quarter impact of the Progressive loan sale.
- Disciplined Expense Management and Acquisition SynergiesCore non-interest expense was $56.9 million, down $1.4 million from the prior quarter and below expectations, driven by accelerated recognition of Progressive acquisition cost saves. Management said substantially all Progressive cost saves were recognized through the third quarter.
- Reduced Higher-Cost FundingThe company paid down roughly $66 million of higher-cost brokered deposits and repaid $108 million of FHLB borrowings during the quarter, leaving total FHLB balances of $334.2 million. Management sees additional opportunity to reduce brokered deposits and borrowings in the fourth quarter.
- Positive Tangible Book Value and Share RepurchasesTangible book value per share increased approximately 1.7% annualized on a linked-quarter basis while the company remained active in share repurchases. Management noted that interest-rate-pressured AOCI and buybacks limited the reported increase, while the company continued growing tangible book value.
- Successful Progressive ConversionThe Progressive core conversion was completed in August and was described as smooth. Management said the integration positions the company to participate in growing investment activity in North Louisiana.
- Healthy Loan Pricing and PipelineWeighted average new and renewed loan yield was 6.99% for the third quarter and 7.13% for September, while core loan yield excluding discount accretion was 6.66%, up 9 basis points from the prior quarter. Management said loan demand and pipelines remained strong, with multiple new deals presented at rates around 7% and no observed decay from the 25-basis-point rate move.
- Positive Near-Term Margin and Growth OutlookManagement expects margin expansion in the fourth quarter and described mid-to-upper single-digit loan growth in Q4 as achievable based on the pipeline. With measured rate movements, management said low-to-mid single-digit quarterly margin expansion may be achievable, depending on the deposit-cost lag.
- Strong Core Deposit RetentionThe overall core CD balance retention rate was 77% during the third quarter. Management continues to view 45%-55% overall deposit betas as achievable for future rate changes.
- Financial Services ExpansionThe financial services group now serves more than 200 banks following the addition of American Planning Corp. Management said the group is growing revenue at better than 20% annualized and remains on pace to improve revenue and bottom-line earnings 20% year over year, which would be the third consecutive year of that performance.
- Expansion in Tyler and Continued Market InvestmentThe company added a six-person commercial team in Tyler, Texas, to fill in the I-20 portion of its footprint between Dallas and Shreveport. Management said the team is expected to begin contributing in Tyler and provide access to additional East Texas markets, including Longview.
- Attractive Regional Growth OpportunitiesManagement highlighted Meta's largest data center in North Louisiana, Amazon's roughly $20 billion commitment in northwest Louisiana, and SpaceX's $100 billion investment in Southwest Louisiana. The company is seeing loan activity related to the Meta investment across multiple Louisiana markets and expects SpaceX-related benefits in both commercial and residential activity over time.
- Diversified Benefit from the Louisiana FootprintManagement said companies serving the Meta development are generating loan fundings in Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and Lafayette, demonstrating a network effect across the company's Louisiana-wide footprint.
- Dallas Remains a Strategic Growth MarketDallas was described as the company's largest individual market and was not de-emphasized. The company hired a new market leader approximately two months ago and expects Dallas to contribute to overall growth in the coming quarters.
- Lower-Cost Bank Deposit FundingThe FIG group manages slightly over $300 million in deposits from other banks, with funding costs 75 to 90 basis points below the cost of a one-year FHLB borrowing and brokered funding. Management said these deposits help solidify relationships across multiple products.
- SSW Portfolio Management AdvantageManagement said SSW's focus on client portfolio cash flow rather than yield has resulted in lower duration risk and a significantly smaller AOCI impact than industry peers. The approach may also allow clients to reinvest cash flows faster as rates rise.
- Expected Credit ImprovementManagement expects non-performing assets to decline in the fourth quarter, potentially by upwards of $15 million, with further reductions through the first half of next year. The stated target is an NPL ratio of 50 basis points or less.
- Path Toward Higher ROAAManagement reiterated a glide path toward a 1.25% ROAA goal in the fourth quarter, compared with 1.17% in the third quarter, provided margin, loan growth, deposit funding and funding costs continue to develop as expected.
