Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Integrated Refinery And Retail NetworkOwning the Geelong refinery plus a branded service-station network gives Viva vertical integration across refining, supply and retail. This durable structure helps capture margins across the chain, secures supply for customers and supports long-term commercial resilience despite commodity cycles.
Diverse Customer And Product MixServing multiple end-markets (retail, commercial, aviation, marine, mining) and product lines (fuels, jet, marine, lubricants) spreads demand risk across sectors. This structural diversification smooths volume cyclicality and supports revenue streams when one market segment weakens.
Resilient Operating Cash GenerationPositive operating cash flow through loss-making periods and a 2025 free cash flow rebound indicate solid cash conversion. Sustained OCF provides liquidity for working capital, debt servicing and targeted capex, giving management more flexibility while profitability normalises.
Bears Say
Sharply Increased LeverageDebt rising and equity falling pushed leverage to very high levels in 2025, materially reducing financial flexibility. Elevated leverage raises refinancing, interest and covenant risk and amplifies earnings sensitivity, limiting strategic options over the medium term.
Deteriorating Profitability And LossesTransition from solid earnings to near-breakeven and then losses erodes capital and constrains reinvestment. Persistent negative net margins weaken returns, increase pressure on cash and make restoring sustainable operating margins a priority for durable recovery.
Revenue Volatility And Recent DeclineTop-line volatility and a 2025 revenue decline complicate capacity planning and investment in a capital-intensive refining business. Irregular revenue trends increase forecasting uncertainty and can prolong recovery if margins and volumes remain unstable.
