Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Large, Growing Asset Management PlatformA $722bn AUM base and strong private markets fundraising create durable, annuity-like management fees and recurring performance fee optionality. Scale in private markets (dry powder and fundraising) supports long-term fee capture, product distribution and cross-selling across Macquarie's corporate and retail channels.
Retail Banking Deposit And Loan Franchise GrowthRapid deposit and loan expansion builds a stable, low-cost funding base and supports sustainable net interest income. A growing 2.3m client base and market share gains in home loans and deposits strengthen structural retail banking revenues and reduce reliance on wholesale funding over the medium term.
Prudent Capital And Funding ProfileA sizable capital surplus, healthy CET1 and long‑dated term funding provide structural resilience to absorb losses, support origination and underwrite client-facing activities. Strong liquidity metrics reduce short-term refinancing risk and enable measured growth without immediate capital strain.
Bears Say
Elevated Balance-sheet LeverageHigh leverage magnifies returns but increases sensitivity to funding shocks, market moves and credit losses. Sustained elevated debt-to-equity constrains strategic flexibility, raises regulatory and capital costs, and amplifies downside risk in stressed markets over the medium term.
Weak, Inconsistent Cash GenerationRecurring negative operating and free cash flow forces reliance on external funding and balance-sheet deployment to support operations and investments. Persistent cash deficits limit organic capital returns, reduce buffer for downturns and can pressure liquidity and funding plans across economic cycles.
Rising Credit Impairments And Asset LossesMaterial provisions and half-year concentration of impairment charges signal rising asset-quality stress and increase earnings volatility. Higher impairment frequency consumes capital and may constrain risk-weighted asset deployment, limiting growth in capital-intensive businesses over coming quarters.
