Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Profitability RecoveryThe strong recovery in gross and net margins indicates improved pricing, product spreads, cost control, or a combination of these factors. Better profitability should support internal reinvestment and resilience over the next several quarters, although results remain below prior-cycle peaks.
Recent Revenue GrowthAfter declines in 2022–2023, the return to revenue growth signals improving demand or shipment conditions across the company’s paper businesses. Sustained top-line recovery would provide operating leverage and reinforce the earnings rebound if volumes and realized pricing remain supportive.
Manageable LeverageDebt-to-equity below 1.0 and a growing equity base provide a reasonable foundation for ongoing operations and investment. This balance-sheet position should reduce financial strain relative to a highly leveraged producer, even though flexibility has declined from earlier years.
Bears Say
Volatile Cash GenerationThe multi-year history of negative free cash flow and sharp operating-cash swings makes earnings conversion less dependable than the profit recovery suggests. Persistent reinvestment needs or working-capital volatility could constrain funding flexibility and increase execution risk over the next several quarters.
Reduced Balance-Sheet FlexibilityAlthough leverage remains below 1.0, the substantial increase from 2020–2021 levels means the company has less balance-sheet capacity than during its stronger historical period. Higher leverage can limit room to absorb weaker paper conditions or finance expansion without added pressure.
Cyclical And Subpeak MarginsThe uneven revenue record and margins still below prior-cycle highs show that the recovery has not restored earlier earnings power. Exposure to cyclical packaging and tissue demand, together with paper-price and input-cost sensitivity, can keep profitability variable over time.
