Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Revenue Recovery And StabilityThe recovery from the 2022 trough and stabilization at roughly HK$5.5B indicate that airport activity and associated revenue streams have regained a more durable operating base. Sustained revenue at this level can support better fixed-cost absorption and provide a foundation for further profitability improvement.
Positive EBITDA MarginsPositive EBITDA margins demonstrate that the airport’s core operating activities generate earnings before depreciation, interest and taxes despite continuing bottom-line losses. Maintaining margins in the 17%–23% range would improve internal funding capacity and support operating resilience as traffic and commercial activity develop.
Improving Cash GenerationThe shift to positive operating cash flow and approximately HK$0.83B of free cash flow in 2025 is a meaningful improvement in cash conversion. This provides greater capacity to fund airport operations and investment internally, although the improvement still needs to prove durable across multiple reporting periods.
Bears Say
Continuing Operating And Net LossesThe company has not yet completed its earnings recovery because both EBIT and net income remain negative. Even with net margin improving to approximately -11%, ongoing losses limit retained capital generation, weaken returns on equity, and leave the business dependent on continued operational improvement before profitability becomes durable.
Rising Leverage And Low Debt CoverageThe substantial increase in debt-to-equity has reduced balance-sheet flexibility while the company is still loss-making. Low debt coverage means current operating cash generation provides only limited support for obligations, potentially constraining investment, increasing financial sensitivity, and making a sustained earnings turnaround more important.
Volatile Earnings Quality And Cash FlowThe sharp year-to-year free-cash-flow swing and volatile gross margin indicate that recent improvement has not yet demonstrated consistent earnings quality. Positive 2025 cash flow is constructive, but instability in conversion and margins makes future funding capacity less predictable and limits confidence in a fully normalized cost structure.
