Svenska Dagbladet, one of Sweden’s largest newspapers, recently published an investigation into how criminal networks use Spotify to launder money, Linnea Ahlgren of The Next Web reports. These criminals will use bitcoin to pay for fake streams of music published by artists with ties to the groups. These fake streams will push higher ratings on the music, which, in turn, will cause the music to have actual streams and gain popularity. The network will then receive real payouts from Spotify.
