Box Office Battle: ‘The Little Mermaid’ wins Memorial Day weekend

"Fast X" places number 2 with another $28.5M for the four days

"Box Office Battle" is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.

Disney’s (DIS) live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” won the Memorial Day weekend at the domestic box office with a four-day debut of $117.5M. For the three-day period, the movie grossed an estimated $95.4M. Overseas, “The Little Mermaid” earned just $68.1M from 51 markets. The live-action film also earned an A CinemaScore.

BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “Fast X” placed number 2 with another $28.5M for the four days and $22.9M for the three-day period, as it crossed the $500M mark globally. Behind it was another Disney title, “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3” with another $25.3M for the four-day weekend. Illumination and Universal’s Nintendo (NTDOY) video game adaptation “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” placed number 4 in its eight outing with $6.2M for the four days. Rounding out the top five, Sony’s (SONY) “The Machine” earned $5.5M in its four-day opening,
