"Box Office Battle" is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
Sony’s (SONY) “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” opened to $120.5M in North America, making it the third-biggest debut ever for an animated movie, not adjusted for inflation, and the second-biggest opening of 2023 to date. Overseas, the sequel opened to $88.1M for a worldwide cume of $208.6M.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Disney’s (DIS) live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” placed number 2 in its sophomore outing with an estimated $40.6M from 4,320 locations for a domestic tally of $186.2M. Behind it was another Disney title, ‘The Boogeyman” with a $12.3M debut. Marvel and Disney “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3” placed number 4 with an estimated $10.2M for a North American total of $322.8M. Rounding out the top five, Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “Fast X” grossed an estimated $9.2M as it crossed the $600M mark globally.
