The new iPhone models unveiled are missing a proprietary silicon chip Apple (AAPL) has spent several year and billions of dollars to develop, Aaron Tilley and Yang Jie of The Wall Street Journal report. In 2018, CEO Tim Cook began having the company focus on designing and building a modem chip, which led to the hiring of thousands of engineers. This was in an effort to sever the company’s dependence on Qualcomm (QCOM). Apple planned to include the modern chip in the new iPhone, but late last year found the chip was too slow, prone to overheating, and was too big for the device.
