Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall, supported by accelerating loan growth, record commercial production, expanding Florida and Tennessee markets, improved profitability, solid capital, stronger credit metrics and growing fee income. The principal challenges were flat sequential deposits, elevated CRE payoffs, higher-cost wholesale funding, potential modest net interest margin compression, increased expenses and lower mortgage banking income.
WesBanco expects mid-single-digit loan growth in 2026, with loan growth to outpace deposits in the near term, fourth-quarter net interest margin potentially a basis point or 2 below the 3.60% reported in the third quarter, fourth-quarter fee income growth in the 3% to 5% range year-over-year, operating expenses in the $153 million range, and a full-year effective tax rate of approximately 21%; CET1 is expected to remain in the targeted range of 10.5% to 11% in the fourth quarter, with the loan-to-deposit ratio potentially reaching the mid-90s, somewhere around 95-ish, and deposit growth expected to be strong in the fourth quarter. Management anticipates 2 Fed rate hikes, 1 in December with no meaningful impact on 2026 results and another in March of 2027, expects the 3.60% margin to be very defendable into 2027, and anticipates a 3% to 5% increase in expenses year-over-year in 2027; the deposit mix is expected to remain about 24%, 25% noninterest-bearing and the other 75% interest-bearing.
- Strong Third-Quarter Earnings and ReturnsThird-quarter GAAP net income available to common shareholders was $85 million, or $0.88 per share, and $86 million, or $0.89 per share, excluding restructuring and merger-related expenses. Year-to-date adjusted earnings per share increased nearly 7% to $2.72, return on average tangible common equity remained nearly 17%, return on average assets improved to 1.3%, and the efficiency ratio declined to 52%.
- Robust Loan Growth and Record ProductionTotal loans increased 5.1% year-over-year and 8.7% annualized sequentially, while C&I loans increased 11% year-over-year and 16% quarter-over-quarter annualized. Commercial teams generated nearly $4 billion of loan production during the first nine months, a 70% increase from the prior-year period, with full-year production expected to be near $5 billion compared with $2 billion in 2024.
- Organic Loan Growth Despite CRE PayoffsCRE payoffs totaled approximately $370 million in the third quarter, creating nearly a 1% headwind to loan growth and a $1 billion headwind over the past 12 months. Despite this, WesBanco generated $1 billion of net organic loan growth over the past year and expects mid-single-digit loan growth in 2026.
- Strong Commercial PipelineThe commercial pipeline was $1.8 billion as of September 30, with half coming from loan production offices and former PFC markets. Management said the pipeline remained stable after quarter-end and provided confidence in outpacing CRE payoffs.
- Expansion in FloridaSince launching in the second quarter, the Florida team developed $300 million in new loan relationships and a similarly sized pipeline. Nearly one-third of the C&I activity spans health care, wholesale and transportation, and the company remains on track to open financial centers in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm and Naples during the first half of 2027.
- Tennessee Market MomentumSince entering Tennessee in 2023, WesBanco has organically built a loan portfolio of more than $750 million, representing nearly 4% of total loans. The expanded Nashville team closed $100 million in new loan relationships in less than three months, with nearly half consisting of C&I loans across health care, recreation and entertainment, and finance and insurance.
- Strong Core-Market ProductionThe Cincinnati and Columbus markets surpassed $1 billion in production during the year, an all-time record. Management also said the Mid-Atlantic market was performing very well and had record production.
- Improved Net Interest Income and MarginThird-quarter net interest income increased $10.2 million, or 4.7%, year-over-year to $227 million, contributing to 5% year-over-year growth in pretax and net earnings and the 7% increase in adjusted earnings per share. Net interest margin was 3.60%, up 7 basis points year-over-year, primarily due to lower funding costs.
- Future Asset Repricing SupportManagement said approximately $250 million of securities cash flows per quarter, or about $1 billion annually, is expected to reprice upward from 3.30% to approximately 5.10%. Approximately $400 million of fixed-rate commercial maturities is expected to reprice from 4.28% at rates at least 200 basis points higher, while approximately $350 million of variable commercial loans is expected to reprice upward by 250 to 275 basis points over the next 12 months.
- Record Fee Income in Multiple CategoriesWesBanco reported record fees from service charges on deposit products, digital banking services and treasury management. Noninterest income increased $1 million, or 2.2%, year-over-year to $46 million, while fee income excluding net security gains and losses increased 5.4%.
- Treasury Management GrowthTreasury management net revenues increased approximately 40% year-over-year to $2.6 million, primarily driven by increased monthly spend from 170 multi-card customers, which was up more than 80% year-over-year.
- Solid Balance Sheet and Capital PositionTotal assets reached a record $28.5 billion, including $19.9 billion of portfolio loans and $4.5 billion of securities. Deposits were $21.6 billion, and the average loan-to-deposit ratio was 91%. The CET1 ratio was 10.6%, within the targeted range of 10.5% to 11%, providing flexibility to support expected growth.
- Improved Credit QualityCriticized and classified loans decreased $93 million, or 55 basis points, from the second quarter to 3.19% of total loans. The allowance for credit losses declined 4 basis points to 1.08% of total loans, or $215 million. Management said credit was trending in the right direction.
- Deposit-Gathering Momentum and InitiativesThe company opened approximately 8,400 new customer accounts during the third quarter. Although deposits were flat sequentially after 37 branch closures, management said deposits were already up a couple of hundred million dollars in the fourth quarter. WesBanco also plans to modify incentive plans to place a heavy focus on deposits, including separate incentives for noninterest-bearing and interest-bearing deposits.
- Potential Branch and Property OptimizationManagement is evaluating additional branch-network optimization, including potential 2-for-1 and 3-for-1 consolidations, with possible cost savings described as mid-single digits to low double digits. The company is also evaluating vacant floors in back-office properties for potential 2027 benefits.
- Positive External RecognitionWesBanco was recognized by Forbes as one of the world's top-performing banks and received its ninth consecutive outstanding Community Reinvestment Act rating from the FDIC.
- Stable Fee and Expense OutlookManagement maintained its expectation for fourth-quarter fee income growth of 3% to 5% year-over-year and operating expenses of approximately $153 million after adding back one-time employee-benefit credits. The full-year effective tax rate is expected to be approximately 21%.
