Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Capital & Liquidity StrengthA robust CET1 ratio and strong liquidity metrics provide durable regulatory buffers and funding flexibility. This supports continued lending, withstands stress, and underpins management's ability to return capital while preserving solvency and strategic optionality over the medium term.
Diversified Fee And Wealth GrowthRising fee income and expanding wealth/AUM reduce reliance on interest margins. Strong digital wealth inflows and record fees create higher-margin, recurring revenue streams that are less rate-dependent, improving revenue resilience and long‑term margin diversification.
Deposit Mix Improvement (CASA)A high CASA ratio sustainably lowers funding costs versus wholesale alternatives. Improved retail and wholesale current-account volumes support margin resilience, enable competitive lending pricing, and provide a stable deposit base for medium-term balance sheet growth.
Bears Say
Net Interest Margin PressureGuided lower NIMs indicate structural pressure on the bank's core spread-based earnings. Even with funding improvements, a materially lower margin compresses net interest income over multiple quarters, reducing earnings power and challenging sustainable return generation.
Elevated Credit Costs And Regional HotspotsMaterial provisioning and guidance for higher credit costs reflect persistent asset-quality risks, notably in Greater China and the U.S. Higher normalized loss expectations diminish capital-adjusted returns and force conservative lending, tempering growth and profitability.
Volatile Cash-flow ConversionInconsistent operating and free cash flow reduces predictability of internal funding, dividends and buybacks. Volatile cash conversion complicates capital allocation, increases reliance on capital actions, and weakens confidence in sustainably financing growth or returns.
