Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Sustainable Cost ReductionMeasured unit-cost reductions and a multi-year savings program can strengthen margins across the cycle. If execution continues, lower conversion costs should improve competitiveness and earnings resilience when lumber prices weaken.
Mill Operating ImprovementThe successful Thomaston ramp-up increases the contribution from an upgraded asset and demonstrates operational execution. Reaching full run-rate should support production efficiency, fixed-cost absorption, and durable capacity utilization.
Liquidity And Balance-Sheet DisciplineStrong liquidity, lower leverage, and mostly maintenance-focused capital spending provide flexibility through the lumber cycle. This discipline can preserve funding capacity while management directs cash toward debt reduction and balance-sheet repair.
Bears Say
Deep And Volatile LossesPersistent bottom-line losses indicate that recent operating improvement has not yet produced stable profitability. Weak gross margins leave earnings highly exposed to lumber prices, input costs, and utilization, limiting confidence in durable returns.
Negative Free Cash FlowNegative free cash flow reduces the company’s ability to repay debt, fund growth, or return capital without relying on liquidity or asset sales. Continued capital intensity and working-capital pressure could constrain flexibility during a prolonged downturn.
Trade And Operating ConstraintsTrade barriers can affect market access and realized prices, while transportation bottlenecks raise delivered costs. Indefinite Ontario curtailments also reduce productive capacity, creating lasting pressure on volumes, efficiency, and regional diversification.

IFP Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call highlighted strong operational and financial improvement in Q2 — notably $92M of adjusted EBITDA, double-digit realized price improvement Q/Q (~11%), an ~8% increase in production volumes, meaningful manufacturing cost reductions (down ~$41/Mfbm or ~6% vs 2025), improved leverage metrics (net debt-to-invested-capital improved to 36.7%), solid liquidity (> $440M), and a successful Thomaston ramp-up. These positives are tempered by persistent external risks and operational challenges: softwood trade dispute uncertainty, transportation/logistics constraints (especially in the U.S. South), indefinite curtailment of two Ontario mills, recent softening in futures and potential seasonal demand volatility, and timing uncertainty for divestiture proceeds. Management’s conservative stance on discretionary capital and continued focus on cost control and balance sheet repair reflect prudence. Overall, the favorable operating and financial momentum outweighs the manageable headwinds discussed on the call.View all TSE:IFP earnings summariesIFP Stock 12 Month Forecast
