Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. AMD reported record revenue, earnings, data center performance and operating leverage, raised its 2027 growth outlook, and described broad customer momentum across EPYC, Instinct, Helios and embedded products. The main challenges were weaker client and gaming trends, a planned double-digit PC market decline in 2027, demand exceeding supply, elevated inventory and capacity investment, component cost inflation, and a significant noncash warrant-related GAAP charge. The positive operating and growth trends significantly outweighed the stated challenges.
For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, AMD expects revenue to be approximately $17 billion, plus or minus 3%, representing approximately 66% year-over-year revenue growth and approximately 27% sequential growth, including data center growth of approximately 50%, a client and gaming segment decline of greater than 20% and double-digit growth in Embedded; non-GAAP gross margin is expected to be approximately 55%, non-GAAP operating expenses approximately $3.75 billion, non-GAAP net interest and other expense a gain of approximately $4 million, the non-GAAP effective tax rate 13% and diluted share count approximately 1.67 billion shares, including the estimated impact of closing the Taalas and the World Labs acquisitions in the fourth quarter. AMD expects data center segment revenue growth to accelerate in the fourth quarter and full-year segment revenue to more than double from 2025; for 2027, it expects revenue to grow more than 80%, server revenue to double year-over-year, data center AI revenue to grow even faster than we projected 90 days ago, data center to be more than 80% of total revenue, PC market unit shipments to decline by a double-digit percentage, and OpEx to grow less than half of the top line revenue growth rate.
- Record Third-Quarter Revenue and EarningsAMD reported its largest and most profitable quarter in history. Revenue increased 45% year-over-year to a record $13.4 billion, while non-GAAP diluted earnings per share increased 74% to $2.09.
- Strong Sequential Growth and Fourth-Quarter OutlookThird-quarter revenue increased 16% sequentially. AMD expects fourth-quarter revenue of approximately $17 billion, plus or minus 3%, representing approximately 66% year-over-year growth and approximately 27% sequential growth.
- Data Center Revenue Nearly DoubledData center revenue increased 97% year-over-year to a record $8.5 billion and increased 27% sequentially. The segment contributed approximately 64% of total revenue in the third quarter, up from 47% one year ago and 58% in the prior quarter.
- Data Center Operating LeverageData center operating income increased 168% year-over-year to $2.9 billion, while operating margin expanded to 34% from 25% a year ago.
- Server Growth Exceeded Prior OutlookCloud and enterprise server sales more than doubled year-over-year, significantly exceeding AMD's previous outlook for more than 80% growth. AMD stated that it gained revenue share, with demand supported by cloud, enterprise, agentic and head-node workloads.
- Broad EPYC AdoptionTurin became the most widely deployed EPYC generation in the public cloud, with more than 540 instance types available globally from the largest providers. AMD added dozens of first-time EPYC enterprise customers, including companies in financial services, communications, retail and health care.
- Strong Venice Pipeline and Helion LaunchAMD began revenue shipments of EPYC Venice processors in the third quarter, with first OEM systems on track for availability in the quarter. OEM and ODM partners committed to more than 240 Venice platforms, 20% more than Turin. AMD also launched Helion, a Venice reference design for turnkey EPYC rack-scale systems, with the first system shipping in the quarter.
- Helion Agentic Infrastructure CapabilitiesA CPU-only Helion rack can include up to 144 Venice processors and nearly 74,000 threads, which AMD described as delivering the highest agent density in the industry. Every major server OEM and ODM plans to offer Helion.
- Record Data Center AI Revenue and MI450 RampFrontier labs, hyperscalers and cloud providers expanded Instinct deployments for inference and training, driving record data center AI revenue. AMD began shipping MI455X in volume, and lead customers including Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle brought their first Helios racks online.
- Expected Helios Deployment ExpansionAMD expects Helios deployments to increase substantially in the fourth quarter as production ramps and HPE, Dell, Lenovo, Super Micro and other OEM and ODM partners begin shipping systems.
- Instinct Supercomputing Design WinsEuroHPC selected Instinct MI430X GPUs and sixth-generation EPYC processors for LUMI-AI, Europe's next flagship supercomputer planned to come online in the second half of 2027. AMD stated that MI430X delivers nearly 9x the double-precision performance of the competition.
- ROCm 10 Software EnhancementsAMD launched ROCm 10 with faster start-up across large GPU clusters, greater resilience for long-running workloads and agentic performance tuning through ROCm.AI. AMD said ROCm.AI can turn weeks of engineering optimization into hours.
- Frontier-Lab Software ValidationAnthropic highlighted that one engineer used Claude to bring up its latest model on Instinct MI355X racks over a single weekend with strong performance.
- Super Intelligence AcquisitionsAMD announced acquisitions of Taalas and World Labs to strengthen its Super Intelligence portfolio. Taalas brings specialized silicon for low-latency, efficient inference, while World Labs brings expertise in spatial intelligence. Both acquisitions were expected to close by the end of the year, and Fei-Fei Li was expected to join AMD as Chief Scientist.
- Raised 2027 Data Center ExpectationsAMD now expects server revenue to double year-over-year in 2027 and data center AI revenue to grow even faster than projected 90 days earlier. Data center revenue is expected to represent more than 80% of total company revenue in 2027.
- Raised Companywide 2027 Growth OutlookAMD now expects revenue to grow more than 80% in 2027, which the company said is more than twice the long-term financial model outlined at its Financial Analyst Day the prior November.
- Client Revenue Growth and Commercial ExpansionClient revenue increased 7% year-over-year to $2.9 billion, driven by strong Ryzen mobile processor sales. Eight of the 10 largest banks globally and seven of the 10 largest health care and automotive companies now use Ryzen PRO PCs.
- Embedded Segment AccelerationEmbedded revenue increased 29% year-over-year to $1.1 billion and 14% sequentially, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of accelerating growth. Demand was strong across aerospace and defense, automotive, communications and industrial end markets.
- Record Embedded Design WinsAMD remained on track to close more than $18 billion of design wins in 2026, its third consecutive record year. AMD expects its embedded business to deliver strong double-digit annual revenue growth and continue outgrowing the market.
- Gross Margin and Operating Margin ExpansionThird-quarter gross margin was 56%, up 190 basis points year-over-year. Operating income increased 75% year-over-year to a record $3.9 billion, while operating margin expanded by more than 5 percentage points year-over-year to 29%.
- Operating Expense LeverageThird-quarter operating expenses increased 29% year-over-year to $3.6 billion as AMD continued investing in data center silicon, systems and software. Management said revenue was growing much faster than operating expenses and expected 2027 operating expense growth to be less than half of the top-line revenue growth rate.
- Strong Balance Sheet and Capacity InvestmentsAMD ended the quarter with $15.8 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments against $7.1 billion of total debt. The company secured wafers, substrates, advanced packaging, memory and other components to support higher growth and said it was investing alongside supply chain partners for long-term capacity.
- Positive Longer-Term Product MomentumAMD said customer engagements for MI500 continued to progress very well, with high interest and multiple frontier labs working with AMD to optimize MI500 for planned multi-gigawatt deployments. AMD also said it was working on MI600 and beyond.
